Its that time of year again, Which Sherdogger is going to Yulin Dog Festival

Comparing Dogs to Chickens, Fish and to a lesser extent Cows/Pigs is sorta like comparing Dogs to humans, no?

Killing/Eating Dogs is abominable, especially when killed inhumanely.

I dont buy the torture stuff.

unless you've got proof that it's a widespread problem, I'm calling it fake news.

butchering animals != torture.

it's believed that the torturing of the dogs (ie. boiling them alive, blow torching, beating, cutting, etc)...it's a common belief and i have heard it firsthand through my relatives (on my dad's side, from mainland) with regards to "preparing" animals when i was younger.

i think we have different ethical and culinary standards culturally here in north america but i find eating domesticated animals disturbing. (i've read and seen pictures of cats/kittens now being served up during yulin) i am by no means a vegetarian or god forbid, a vegan, but i find it hard to believe that there are no alternatives and they "need" to eat dogs...strays and kidnapped house pets. dog meat is eaten in a lot of provinces in china but as far as i am aware, it's very prevalent in the south where they tend to eat a lot of weird shit.

the bigger problem i have is the method in which they are treated before being killed. in some of the videos that i've seen, the dogs are cowering or bowing down to be spared only to be bludgeoned to death or manhandled by giant tongs clamped around their throats. there was a dog that was still alive, twitching while being blasted with a blowtorch...seeing that it was still squirming, someone comes into view with a steel pole and beats the dog and then it lies motionless. when i was watching a few with the volume on and you can hear the dogs screaming, my dog looked up and started shaking.

^and the content in that vice video is tamer than most of the videos i've seen on yulin

tl; dr: i am so goddamn ashamed of my people for this shit.

I've eaten dog before. It wasn't intentional. At the time I didn't know what meat it was. Tasted very poor, so you are not missing out on anything.

As for eating dogs, I personally hate the idea of it as I love dogs, but I can't blame another culture for it. If we were held to the same standard the hindus would deny us beef, the muslims would deny us pork, the jews would deny us shellfish etc.

meh, not really shook by those vids/photos. Butchering any animal is a cruel world.

as for food of choice, you think dogs are bad, but consider that the chinese eat rats FFS. Bottom of the totem pole meat, makes dog seem pretty delicious. Another weird, but normal animal to eat are frogs. Those are damn disgusting creatures, but many folks love eating them. Dog seems like an upgrade logically speaking. Some cultures worship Cows, and we eat them like no tomorrow!

i have had both frogs and fermented rice wine with field mice, but they aren't really kept in the house as domesticated pets. i have a dog which i have raised since 10 weeks old so i am biased.

i understand why dogs are chosen or resorted to as a food source, i just don't condone the mistreatment before they are killed for food. i think blowtorching them while they are still alive is a bit extra.

Is there a video of blowtorching a live dog? You're putting yourself at serious risk doing that to a live animal....

I've seen plenty of dead animals torched, that's common practice.

I've been told cat is significantly worse than rat.
Not that I've tried the unidentified rodents I've come across.

I haven't done rats, but cats taste like chicken, nothing wrong with that, unless it really wasn't cat??? Sometimes I can't trust what people say...

Well, I've heard conflicting reports then. Vietnam?

Different culture doesn’t mean you can skin raccoon dogs alive and let them drip while twitching and suffering...

I swear I would strangle those Chinese bastards to death.

I saw that video too. Disgusting and sadistic as fuck but I don't think that's how they normally do it. After all, a skinless raccoon is of no use alive, and I bet a live animal is harder to skin than a dead one.

That said, that particular asshole doing the skinning in the video should be shot.

I've actually ate dog in China, one of their hot pot style. Damn that taste is heavy as fuck. Imagine the strongest flavoured mutton you've eaten and dog is twice as strong. Pretty yummy the first few bites but turns revolting after a while. The Chinese say cat meat tastes even stronger.

I probably ingested some poison too considering how some of those assholes catch dogs with poison darts.

I've also had snake (delicious!), squirrel and bats (tastes like chicken when fried), turtle and crocodile.

You should be fine as long as they're field rats and not the sewer ones. I honestly wouldn't mind trying.

Yeah, I've had crocodile, turtle, snake, camel, goat, emu and shitloads of kangaroo that I know of.
I'm usually good to try any food.
Plenty of unidentified food throughout S E Asia.
Those rats were just at a stall on the side of the road in Thailand (Koh Samui), so I didn't get any.
They are consumed pretty commonly there apparently, although it's considered food for poor people.

Have tried Dog?
Your username suggests you have smoke grilled a dog.

Charred Dog.

You get what I ma sayin.

You get da bro?
Eh?

Sigh... Another year of feeling terrible about laughing at the sight of 10 cute dogs being held together in a net, likely about to be boiled or whatever.

It looks funny to me, ok? I'm sorry..

Snake and alligator taste great. Bear is good in gravy, as well. Dogs haven't been bred for taste, so I'm not surprised they aren't that good.

I remember watching a documentary about all of this on HBO like 20 years ago . . . it was a sight to see what they did with those "pets".

life was better before the internet and media access.

Tales like this were just chit chat.

there is one which i have mentioned earlier where they are blowtorching two dogs, one brown, one black. the black one is dead, lying motionless. the brown one is twitching a bit still and his paws are kicking away at air but it is barely hanging on, so someone comes along and whacks it in the head twice with a steel pole and then the dog stops moving.

Now I suspect I have eaten those things. I spent a month living in a shack in on Koh Samui in the early ‘90’s. Stayed that long because the it was cheap ($6/day was good living), diving was awesome, boxing almost every night, and I was terrified of taking the ferry back to the mainland after it developed a major list on the way over. The captain made about 40 of us guys stand on the outside of the rail and lean out like we were on a sailboat for about the final 15 minutes. I’ve heard it is a bit fancy now.
