It's Official: Pro Boxers can now compete in the Olympics!

Seriously bad idea. I don't want to see top guys beating up amateurs.

Lol. The top guys won't fight each other unless they are getting paid the real money.

There at least two Ppv names who said they want to fight.

And fuck golf/tennis etc

Strange that you think that, when the top guys in other sports, namely the NBA have been doing it for over 20 years.

Yeah but who watches. We all know the top ball players are American.

As if they hadn't done enough to ruin amateur boxing already.

Who watches? When the NBA stars like Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, Jordan etc. donned the Olympic gear, it was like watching the All Star games. If you don't follow the NBA, I find it strange you'd ask that question.

I follow the nba and have never watched a game at the Olympics. Because it means squat.

Do you honestly want to see wlad tea bag the super hws?

Awful idea - a few up and coming contenders will wipe the floor of the genuine amateurs to increase their media profile and get bragging rights about a medal, and a few established big names towards the end of their careers will finish the rest off to add a medal to their millions.

The Olympics should be confined to sports which either:
A - Require no sophisticated equipment - running, swimming, jumping over stuff, lifting stuff up, throwing things
B - Have a martial element - boxing, wrestling, javelin, discus, archery, fencing

No golf.

Why not? Other professional sports have been competing in the Olympics for decades.

If you can't see why having seasoned pros (maybe world champions) sharing a ring with amateurs is a piss poor idea, then you're a lost cause pa! It's a fckin stupid idea and the Olympics run the risk of someone suffering a serious injury or worse! youre nba comparison is laughable!

There has always been an age discrepancy between fighters in the Olympics. You have amateurs that are 30 that fight against 22 year olds. I don't like the change either, but experience differences have always existed. Vijender Singh was a pretty good Olympic fighter, and he's a 30 year old pro with only a few fights. His style isn't going to go far to me. Then you have guys like Lomachenko who translate well to the pros.

I don't like the decision, but I don't think it's the death knell for amateur boxing that some are making it out to be.

There's a slight difference between throwing a ball in a hoop to getting punched. If you had ever done either I'd guess you'd realise that.

I don't know how I feel about this. The Olympics are all about the spirit of competition and the best of every country competing against one another. So I can see that side, but on the other hand having the top pros in there with 18 and 19 year olds seems horribly unfair.

I actually like this. I think it will be good for the sport to have guys in the Olympics who have name recognition.

The olympics should be the best in the world at a given sport, not the youngest/best who have not yet decided to make money (or are not good enough to make money).

Athletes should not have to decide between making a living and representing their country.

I agree.

Plus some countries have much deeper ammy programs then ours. So there are some grown ass men with 300+ fights, fighting not even 18 year olds with a fraction of the fights, fighting for our country.

Exactly. Are we going to pretend Lomachenko was not a grown man and seasoned pro-caliber boxer? Maybe if other guys of his caliber stayed in the ammies instead of going pro he would have had more competition.

I actually cannot think of a single reason why allowing professionals in the olympics is a bad thing.

Losing in basketball doesn't have the same connotation as losing in boxing. Lose a game, you get to redeem yourself tomorrow. Lose against a champion, and it'll be a year before you build yourself back to title contention; maybe longer.

Basketball players also benefit from dilution of responsibility. If the Dream Team loses, it's not necessarily because any one of them was bad; they might not play well as a team for any number of reasons.

Plus NBA players have contracts that stipulate how much they'll get paid for how many seasons. Boxers normally don't get that kind of guarantee. If they lose, their next check will likely be a lot smaller.

For some reason if you lose a fight, people think you aren't shit. Look at how quickly people turned on Rousey and Conor. I don't even like them but you could see the perception shift immediately. Dedicated fans don't think like that but casual ones do, and they pay the bills.

I didn't read this particular article yet, but before I believe it was starting this year. I do think they should've skipped this Olympics. We just changed the scoring system, and now changing the qualifying requirements just feels like pulling the rug out from under guys who have been working towards this for years.
