Close fight but IMO Izzy’s strikes impacted Rob more than vice versa. Whittaker didn’t need to do THAT much more to make it a different story, but he just wasn’t aggressive enough. He needed to be mixing strikes with grappling, not just grappling to gain control and only then look to do damage.

Personally I just think it’s a bad matchup for Whittaker. Izzy is so long (and has the speed and technique to use it) that Whittaker never feels comfortable with the range to commit to good power shots. In the first fight he lunged a lot (basically became Brunson) and predictably got countered. This time he did the opposite.

I agree with you.
But I think a lot was just optics and perception.
Rob looked far less comfortable (and far less confident) than Izzy.
But he was (at least) trying whereas I always felt Izzy was comfortable sitting back and defending rather than attacking. And that, IMHO should not award a win.

Again, this is just how I view the fight. I know it is not a very popular opinion.

Just rewatched rounds 2-5.

Round 2 legit came down to what you value more, jabs or leg kicks. Personally I value jabs more. Whittaker's takedown was just icing on the cake. But horribly biased commentary tried to make it sound like Izzy won it without question.

Round 3 was izzy's but was again a very close round that horribly biased commentary made out like Izzy dominated it.

Round 4 was another round where it came down to what you value more, jabs or leg kicks. Rob also landed a very good right hand near the end of the round. Watching it live I gave it to Rob and upon rewatch I def think he took it.

Round 5 was Rob's hands down. Most decisive round of the fight outside of round 1.

Izzy point fights with leg kicks despite them doing zero significant damage. I've noticed it becoming a new trend with some fighters and it's annoying because the commentators jizz all over it even if the kicks are not impacting the fight at all.

Whitaker's takedowns didn't do anything either but at least they acknowledged that.

I don't like izzy but Rob was limping in between rounds. Whenever izzy landed a use like he nearly swept rob. One body kick landed shifted robs entire body when it hit. It was a boring performance but he was throwing hard when he did throw and was doing damage

I only gave Izzy the first round. I thought Whittaker owned the rest of the fight. Izy was just doing cool foot shuffles and making confident faces. That shouldnt translate into a win
