The pressure is off of Whitaker now, in his head, he knows that if he loses he's still the champion, and I think that subconsciously he won't fight as hard as if he had more to lose!

There are some things that you just can't control with the mind.

If a guy fought someone in a street fight and later said..."I gave it all I had", which I'm sure he believes he did, but if he fought the same guy in the same scenario but his wife and kid were in danger as well, without even thinking about it, he would fight much harder.
