I think a lot of those Hollywood action guys from that era were basically neutered once MMA hit the scene. Seagal was a legit martial artist. Whether the art he practiced actually had real world application is debatable. He was probably more dangerous than some regular dude, and would have been killed against a mediocre shoot fighter.
