Sherk definitely looks the best when you list the people he lost to (Matt Hughes, GSP, Frankie Edgar, BJ Penn) rather than listing the guys he beat (Nick Diaz, Kenny Florian, Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca)

I thought he lost to Diaz. Kenny was good but useless of his back against better wrestlers (see also Gray Maynard who gave him 30-27 treatment). Griffin maybe the most overrated fighter ever according to betting odds. Franca well I don't remember that well other than the "problems" irl.

Man, forgot how great Sherk was. His record was 36-4-1 at the time of his retirement.

And his 4 losses were to Matt Hughes, GSP, BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar, all elite Hall of Fame type fighters.

Sherk was not doing terrible in the striking against Penn from memory. Penn started to gas

Sherk injured his right hand in that fight, so he was basically fighting with one hand. Great win for Penn, but Sherk was severely compromised that fight.

I would say their approach to training is similar. Sherk was ahead of his time with his approach to training. You can watch someone train today, and Sherk training 15 years ago and there is virtually no difference. They're both the type to leave no stone unturned in training. I would say Volk and his team are way better in gameplanning hence the difference in results. Yes, they are both short and bulky but I would say their intensity is what makes them similar. I would also throw Frankie Edgar into the mix.

Also rewatch the fight, Sheryl was starting to pile on the pressure on Penn before the knee. Penn was fading and Sherk started to come on quite strong. If that fight had went on I would not be shocked of Sherk pulled out the tko win
