Is this legal

The difference is that digging elbows in the thighs is just completely shit. Again, it is something you LET your opponent do. It is not something he does to you, you do it to you.

If your opponent is digging his elbows in then he will have a bad defence against breaking down his posture.

It really depends how it's being done. Done correctly you can maintain posture, keep your arms tucked in tight and close (and together) and avoid your elbows being flared while you split the legs. Probably more effective 'nogi' though. But then with a gi you have handles you can grab to force their hips to the floor and would choose a different guard break anyway.

The elbow in the ribs from to get the wrestler's guillotine with a single leg vine is a perfect example. i.e. your avatar. That pic was on our mat room wall as well. Good ish.

Yeah, if you can get the elbow to the small of the back and then to a bicep curl you'll be sorted.

Sorry man, I have a lot experience with this (especially No Gi) and I don't really see it working in any shape or form.

I may be wrong, maybe your instructor can make a video of his way to do this?

The second you slide both hands down to the hips, I do a crunch and start working on your arms. Unless I am late as hell, I will find a way to break the grip, before you break open the legs. Again, from my experience...

My exact perspective of it. I also do no-gi and I can't see it working really.

Who said anything about putting my hands down to your hips?

If my hands were to go anywhere it'd be underneath the ribcage but then I wouldn't be using my elbows to do a guard break. Plus I wouldn't be breaking any guard until I'd won the hand fighting / pummeling aspect first. Even a guy like Popovitch plays this way.

Well, we were talking about the guard break, where you use the elbows on the thigh to break the legs open via 'pressure point', weren't we?

Thats my exact point. You can't break the guard by pain/pressure without giving up that ribcage control. One arm is not enough either as if you have one I have two. The hand fighting doesn't really end in guard though. It is not like you do it 5 seconds then your opponent quits and let you break his guard.

It ends when one guy has control of the other guys arms imo, and in a particular way as well. If you're on your back (the uke is it?) You'd ideally want head and arm control and go into the posture breaking you were talking about for sweeps or subs.

As I mentioned earlier, just bringing your elbows into the inner thigh isn't the best way to do it from what I've learned recently. There's a mechanical process involved.

But I'll say no more.:icon_twis
