Is the DDT a practical MMA technique?

I don't think it's ever a good idea to pull bottom side control, especially not if you have their neck and could go for a choke instead.

Apologies for necroing a very old thread, but I think pulling half-guard on the far side leg would negate this issue (provided the fighter has a good half-guard) while not reducing the effectiveness of the DDT and be completely legal in MMA unified rules:

Standing guillotine > pull half-guard > land the DDT > opponent either KOed or dazed enough that you can take the back without much resistance

Again, apologies for resurrecting a thread from 2010 - it's just something I've been wondering about but which I also don't really consider worth starting a new thread on.

I tought it was more a "neck/spine damager" instead of a head or face hitting the ground ...

Maynard v Emerson in TUF 5 Finale.

Technically was a takedown by Maynard, but Maynard got self KO'd and Emerson couldn't continue so it was scored a NC.

i guess this is a good time to ask this ... what about the crippler.??. :) :)

my older cousin used to it to me as a kid and it hurt like hell as I remember ... is this illegal too?

laugh away

way too easy to hip escape that for it to be effective. you could easily end up with the guy on your back if you tried to use the crippler.

Imanari tapped a guy with something similar from the omoplata.

Since the IBJJF banned Sumi Gaeshi as a counter to the head-outside Single Leg I'm just going to start DDTing people instead of rolling them over.

Mark Kerr knocked himself out with one. Then his opponent acted really disrespectful like he had just accomplished something incredible. Then they punished him by making him fight Crocop. Good times were had by all.

Fisrt thing I thought of when I saw this thread. Yamamoto wasnt it? Kerr went in for a takedown and got DDT'd

I first read that as "the IJF banned sumi gaeshi" and was about to get indignant.

Didn't Cain essentially DDT Junior in their second fight?

Too risky, you botch it up and you gave your opponent free side control.

I have a figure four leg lock set up from inside your opponents de la riva. Saving it for a few years when i put out my first (shitty) dvd.
