Is Petr Yan better than prime BJ technique wise?

This is how BJ would have Yan but worse

This is dumb, I hated BJ Penn in his prime, I love Yan (no homo) and BJ Penn is just a bigger fighter and has a way better resume. What is the purpose of comparing these 2?
I'm not speaking about resume

This is only about skills

Could be. Penn was very skilled but also had a lot of athletic gifts. Granite chin, natural ko power, flexibility, balance, good strength.

Yan is a good athlete in his own right, but he fights more technique I'd say.

BJ was easily 1 of the best wrestlers, he fought 3 of the best WW wrestlers of his era i GSP, Hughes, & Fitch. No way would Yan have fared better than BJ in the wrestling department if he had to face the 3 best wrestlers in the next weight class up. GSP used a great strategy to gas BJ out in the rematch so the TD would come easier after. BJ wrestling was universally praised, no way is his wrestling a 7 and Yan a 8. Saying Yans wrestling vs O Malley was the greatest or whatever is a huge stretch because O Malley isnt known for his wrestling at all

BJ Penn was a BJJ world champion in 3 years. Not a black belt in BJJ. A legitimate world champion.
He's known to have the 2nd best TDD in MMA history behind Aldo.
He was known as the best boxer in the UFC during his time. Fast and dangerous hands.
I'm sorry but compared to BJ Yan is unremarkable. Jack is all trades master of none. Good everywhere but great nowhere. Yan will not be remembered because of his fighting skills. He's a good fighter but never at one time was he considered that best in the UFC at something. BJ was. Yan will be remembered for throwing an illegal knee at a grounded opponent 2 seconds after the ref told him not to do it and losing the BW title.

BJ was definitely not an 8/10 in striking.

He could outstrike wrestlers with bad striking like Hughes and Sherk, or wild ass brawlers like Diego, but not actual strikers.

He was maybe a 6-7. Closer to 8 would be guys who dominated him in striking like Edgar, Rory and Nick.

**BJ was definitely more of a technical brawler. He was never as crisp as Yan was.
That said, he got to (and was able to stay at) the top of the sport by finishing fights.
To answer your question, though: I’d argue that Yan is significantly more technical outside of his BJJ.

I get BJ is a legend but go look at his record. He was definitely not a multi-generational guy like Jon Jones. He had one reasonably good decade.
He also did enough coke to make JBJ look like the LW.

I would say prime BJ is the better BJJ and Wrestler.

It just his cardio sucks.

BJ has a better jabs and more power.
Yan is more diverse in strikes
BJ much better grappler
BJ also had a god chin.

BJ wins via RNC after he drops Yan

Very intriguing fantasy fight. I wonder if prime BJ would’ve done any better than Petr, O’Malley, or Umar did against Merab..

Yeah, Penn was a better wrestler than Yan.

If sean can stun Yan then BJ could have absolutely put his lights out.

Prime Penn cracked the iron chin of Diego and he'd sure as fuck do it to that manlet prime for prime.

I don't think any of us know if Yan can give a prime BJ or not
