Is Ortega still the man to beat Khabib?

Yes. He’s a way better striker than Khabib and Khabib can’t really do anything to him in the ground. Styles make fights 101.
You are oversimplifying things. Khabib doesnt need to be the better striker,or even spend any time in ortegas guard to win this fight. The point is,if he can vary his offense to where Ortega doesnt know what he is going to do,land unpredictable shots like he did against Conor and hurl him to the mat (not a sacrfice throw) every time ortega tries to put something together, and get in some shots, make him stand back up ala Fedor vs Nogueira III... there is alot of ways to fight Ortega that Khabib is capable of. There are much more variables at work here than striking and grappling.

Some guys on here believed Ortega was the man to finally beat Khabib.

Are you guys (you know who you are) still of the same opinion?
No. Khabib is not going to be subbed at 155, especially not by a 145-er. I've said this before many times and I'll say it again: Khabib won the world NAGA championship at WW against world level brown and black belts while not being able to use his GnP. He achieved this through sheer positional dominance, his takedowns and sub-defense. Moreover, these types of competitions are plagued by roiders since there's no testing so he was potentially outgrappling BJJ experts who are much stronger than anyone at 155. Khabib's grappling game becomes only better when translated to MMA, since he gets access to GnP and he almost never ends up on the bottom, so he is not getting threatened by his opponent's GnP in turn. It would take someone as strong and skilled as Jacare and/or Maia to potentially sub Khabib, not a bloated 145-er.

I see this fallacy, that Khabib has poor 'striking' is still being pushed. Hmm, can you name me one fight were Khabib has been outstruck ? Meanwhile, Ortega gets picked apart on the feet in the majority of his fights, before winning by a hail Mary submission..

Still a good matchup for Ortega not saying he wins 100% but Khabib and Max are too different to make an opinion bassed off last nights fight

I give him a chance. Styles make fights.

I think Justin and Lee are the real problems for Khabib at 155.

I think he has 1 more weight cut in him so ffs let it be Tony. He deserves it and is the #1.

Khabib can literally lie on top of him for 5 rounds and win.

People who think Ortega has a chance against Khabib have NEVER trained, know nothing about the sport, or are just repressed Connie fans.

Ortega’s game basically revolves around volume, front headlocks, and triangles off his back against opponents he wears on. Nothing that would trouble Khabib.

Khabibs game is a safe pressure based style. He would gladly sit in Ortegas guard/half guard pound his face in with short shots without exposing himself and eventually open up for the bigger ones later in the fight.

Ortega doesn’t have the size, cardio, or power to deal with Khabib.

He’s got heart! I don’t see khabib putting ten punch combos like Max tho. IMO it’s a close fight Ortega will try to stand and bang like tonight and khabib prob try’s to dry hump him for 5rds.

It's a bit odd, but I see Ortega as the better matchup to Khabib, just because he's the far dangerous submission threat on the ground or any other position. I think Max's pitter patter striking and TDD would get washed away against Khabib's superior wrestling and size/strength advantage. Khabib literally has 100s of tricks to keep you glued to the ground/against the fence.

Matchups make fights and Ortega would have an easier time with Khabib because they're both grapplers. Just because Khabib landed one great overhand vs Conor doesn't make him a top boxer like Max.

Still an intriguing match. Guy to beat him? I couldn't say that with confidence. But yeah Khabib dosen't pose the same style of threat that max used to beat him, and honestly more plays into ortega's wheelhouse. Gotta imagine Khabib is physically bigger though. Would watch though to see if he could actually manage to catch him with something slick.

Rafael Dos Anjos is a third degree black belt, ask him if he minded getting thrown around like a laundry bag by 2013 khabib.

Ortega is much more dangerous than RDA from nearly every position. Dude has a legit guard so he won't just gas himself out trying to get up.

I think Ortega would eventually be overwhelmed by Khabib if his initial setups didn't work. I just don't see anyone under 170 beating him.

If anyone thinks a wrestler will beat a submission specialist because a boxer did, is not very bright.

Not saying Khabib can’t or won’t win, but that is not very good reasoning.

RDA has an amazing defensive guard, he took pretty much zero damage in his fight against Khabib. His submissions from guard are pretty much nonexistent, though. RDA needs top position to really work his jits.

Khabib is not a "wrestler", he is one of the most complete grapplers in all MMA.

I didn't see anybody say that, but I would've called that a stupid opinion long before last night. Khabib has the stylistic advantage there, is used to fighting bigger guys and is more talented.

Never thought he was the guy but Holloway fight wouldn't have changed my opinion

100% possible Ortega catches him in something
