Is Metamoris affecting 'traditional' bjj?

Oh my god Sambo vs Judo would be insane or Sambo vs BJJ. Or hell seeing an elite sambo guy vs an elite catch guy would be absolutely unreal for the sheer amount of leg lock attempts lol

Really? I think their goal is just to make something exciting people will want to watch (and pay for). That's already hard enough to do without throwing in the whole "Gracie JJ" thing in the mix, imho

I disagree. There has been an enormous GJJ bias displayed by Ralek et al throughout every event. From having to force one of "their" guys on us every card to the following:

M1- Ralek et al go out of their way to defend Ryron's performance and practically demonize Galvao afterwards.

M2- (Perhaps the worst) The ridiculous defense of Schaub's performance. So ridiculous that the promoter/owner (Ralek) jumped into the press conference to defend Schaub, while Schaub was sitting right there unable to defend himself.

M3- The complete whitewashing of the Royler/Bravo fight as evidenced by the "coverage" by Graciemag. And don't forget about the "Helio Filter"!

M4- Barnett winning and Ralek's completely amateurish response on stage.

Ralek force feeding the GJJ propaganda during every event is unprofessional and will hurt the Metamoris promotion in the long run. If you want GJJ to be the star then let it stand on its own merit without having to "spin" every single fault or failure.

We all love jiu jitsu/sub grappling and want Metamoris to succeed, but Ralek needs to get over his own ego and let BJJ/Sambo/CACC/Judo or whatever shine not just GJJ.

Talk about bias...

There really isn't style vs style match ups anyway at this point, not in the sense of BJJ vs Catch Wrestling. Barnett was trained by Erik Paulson, a guy who has trained under lots of top BJJ guys and added some other stuff to it. So Barnett trains BJJ and with BJJ guys constantly, regardless of calling it Catch Wrestling. Everyone else has trained with Judo guys, Sambo guys, etc.

The only real style vs style that is going on is a person's individual style and preference. Some are guard pullers, some want the takedown, some are great on top. Some guys come from the sport BJJ scene and use all of the crazy stuff, some are more traditional.

Dude the fact Ryon could be in those bad spots with Andre and survive was a great display of defense, and the last 5 minutes Andre seemed gassed, I think Ryron would have closed the deal with no time limit.

No doubt , was lame in the press conference, but Ralek did apologize in a video later and described new rules to avoid another Shcuab performance.

Does Ralek work for GracieMag? Although people refer to the family as such they aren't a single unit.

Yeah, that was whack and he was wearing a t-shirt...

well, Barnett was pretty clear on which style he repping and he offered to come back to do it again.

I think barnett's comment probably made Ralek get up and bring another challenge to Barnett about someone there wanting to fight him in the next metamoris. Barnett did not waste any time pumping up Catch as you can style of grappling. And he did put BJJ down a bit.

this and Metamoris 2 sucked so bad.

If they really were trying to promote 'Gracie Jiu Jitsu' surely they would have more Gi matches. I think the exposure helps every type of grappling, which only serves to increase the level we see at competition.

I agree with the idea that grappling is grappling regardless of what you call it.

But, if we are applying names to styles, I don't think you can say that due to his exposure to BJJ, Barnett is really just a BJJ guy rebranding jiu-jitsu as CACC.

Hell, Helio, Carlos, and George Gracie were all exposed to Catch Wrestling in the early days of GJJ/BJJ. They were fighting alongside and against catch wrestlers and even training with them. So, I guess you could say they were really doing CACC and just calling it jiu-jitsu?

Here is a pic of Maeda himself (supposedly the Gracie's whole link to jiu-jitsu) looking a whole lot more like Josh than like Comprido and Saulo the other night:

well that is the question.

Metamoris goal is not to promote sub grappling but more promote Gracie JJ IMO.

So how much more will be coming?

Will we continue to see GJJ vs BJJ, BJJ vs CACC, sub grap vs sub grap etc..?

yesterday car only had 1 gi match and the rest was nogi.

How the hell are they "promoting GJJ" when their Was ONLY 1 gi match ??? Big contradiction here....

Also why invite catch wrestlers if you only want bjj to be promoted ?? .

.. I think metamoris is doing a great job of promoting all grappling arts, in a professional and stylish environment.

If "traditional" BJJ is getting beaten by "non-traditional" BJJ, then maybe some traditional BJJ is not so good and we have some preconceived notions we should revisit? Look at the traditional "baiana" as it is taught in many traditional BJJ texts. Would not work against a middle school wrestler.

Or, as often happens in high level competitions, some people have physical attributes that blur the lines of techniques? Eddie's dexterity and flexibility in his legs, Josh Barnett's size and strength.

The Ryron-Galvao match at least was 100% to promote GJJ. For their internal audience, it was a homerun. Externally, most people still really don't seem to get it.

I agree with you. I was not trying to disparage Ryron's performance (I was actually rooting for him.) It was the spin after the match.

That is a fair point.

The whole thing was a little eh for me. Granted I missed the firs match, but Yoshida and Glover basically doing a gumby exhibition. Comprido and Riberio doing out of shape old man BJJ. Lister laying there and getting smothered by Barnett. Vinny and Keenan in the butt scoot/footsie challenge. Chael trying to stall as long as he could, then Galvao finally showing the goods.

Is this what BJJ is now?

While not all of your criticisms are invalid... is there ANYthing you like about grappling?

If you hate the footsie game, I mean couldn't you at least appreciate some of the solid takedowns and basic sweeps in Ribeiro/Comprido?

I freaking love the Legends matches. It sucks that nobody competes in wrestling over age 35.

If you can't respect what Vinny and Keenan did out there you are not a grappling fan. Same for Lister stepping up against the larger opponent. And Chael stepping up too when he knew he was outgunned when it came to submissions. How would Andre do against Chael in a wrestling match?
