Is Khabib's wrestling D-1 level or Olympic level?

Many D1 wrestlers are not accustomed to freestyle or Greco-Roman rule-sets themselves though and Khabib's first martial art was freestyle, which he used to amplify his Sambo game.

He would probably beat a lot, if not most, of D1 wrestlers in freestyle matches.

Also- not being good enough to make the Russian Olympic team for wrestling is different than not being good enough to make the American Olympic team for wrestling.

The Caucuses region, and greater Russia in general, hold more than 50% of the world's Olympic-level wrestlers, whereas America holds less than 20%.

Khabib would easily be D1 in America if the they practiced freestyle as opposed to folkstyle (or whatever they do), and might even be good enough to make the American Olympic team.
Roman and Khabib are not wrestling in that video, looks like just an over under pummeling drill. If they competed in a real wrestling match (GR or Freestyle) Roman would tech him in under a minute.

You think the strongest GR wrestler of recent times would beat Khabib easily in GR wrestling match? yeh, ofcourse.

They are wrestling. Not sure what you think an over under pummeling drill is, but this is wrestling sparring.

Khabib has been wrestling/grappling longer than most NCAA champions and wrestlers. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Khabib were capable of mauling current NCAA top 3 all american wrestlers in purely wrestling/grappling.

I say this only because we've never even seen an olympic, NCAA, or BJJ grappler implement their grappling as well and as dominant as he has.

Even the best guys like GSP and DC have had their wrestling games thwarted in a few fights. DC got taken down more times by Gustaffson and GSP couldn't take down Hendricks much (A fantastic wrestler also).

GSP took Hendricks down 3/6 times, 50% success rate on takedowns is very good. GSP's td rate was 74%. If that's the fight you wanna use to diminish GSPs wrestling then it's not really a good one to pick.......considering Khabib went 3/7 vs Conor, 6/15 vs Al, 4/13 vs Edson, 2/6 vs Johnson, and 0/13 for Gleison. Khabibs td rate is 47%.

Besides....there is more to wrestling than just takedowns. Overall both are beyond dominant with their control and grappling. But Gsp is the better takedown artist.

The end goal of wrestling is pinning your opponent, where the end result in grappling is to submit your opponent. So there are moves and strategies in wrestling that don’t necessarily apply to grappling. I’m far from an expert, especially in terms of wrestling but that’s a crude explanation since I don’t think I saw anyone else comment

I am not sure where you get this diea from. Maybe it's American style wrestling. Pinning is very rare in wrestling and most wrestlers are trying to expose the back for points and get takedowns.

Pardon my ignorance but could someone please explain to me the main differences between a grappler and a wrestler? I'm serious, I've been watching this sport for a long time and I'm still not sure I know the difference. Thx in advance

Everyone here has a different definition of what a ‘wrestler’ or ‘MMA wrestler’ is.

Wrestling is a pin/fall sport.
You’re not allowed to punch your opponent or knee them.
You’re not allowed to circle away and avoid them.
If you take them down, they will be belly down or on all 4’s and will not be on their back like an MMA fighter.
So, HOW THE HELL CAN ANYONE BE “OUTWRESTLED” in an MMA fight?

The word from AKA was that he was more than holding his own with Ed Ruth (3x D1 national champ) in training for whatever that's worth

He has wrestled his whole life in a region known for producing world class wrestlers. Not only that but he trains full time.

Anyone who thinks he wont be a high level wrestler is a moron.

The guy saying he would make the American team is wrong. The American team is very strong right now.

However I am sure Khabib could smoke D1 level wrestlers and without a doubt highschool wrestlers.

Does anyone know how well he does in straight wrestling against actual top wrestlers?

He looks like he'd be a pretty good folk style wrestler. Not sure if that translates to D1 All American level status or not.

Freestyle at the Olympic level? I feel like he'd get destroyed.

It’s the end goal of folk style wrestling if I’m not mistaken

For all wrestlers a pin would be nice. But in free/folk/Greco getting a pin in high level competition is rare. Sure it happens but it comes down to positional battles and points.

Fair enough, if you couldn’t tell I have never wrestled before haha just no gi and bjj. But anyways, I still would say there is a difference in goal between grappling and wrestling which makes certain strategies and maneuvers specific for each one.

I mean they are not doing a 100% full spar, they are drilling technique in that video. Khabib is a fantastic MMA wrestler but if he showed real potential at a young age he would have continued with Freestyle or Greco Roman.
