There's no questioning that Cael Sanderson is one of the greatest amateur wrestlers of all time. Same goes for Jon Jones in mma, but it seems they're both able to get into Cormier's head. Is Cormier just not quite on these men's level physically or is he mentally weak and able to be manipulated by true alpha males?

Sanderson was a better wrestler all together.

Jus think of how many great wrestlers there are, guys like Hendricks, Koscheck, Weidman then there are GREAT wrestlers like Kyle Dake and Cael Sanderson, Jordan Burroughs.

These guys are just completely on different levels, even against guys as accomplished as 2 time national champion Johnny Hendricks.

He did beat Sanderson twice in the international wrestling scene.

Cael did beat him in the olympics though.

Won't say mentally weak but he doesn't have the skill traits to beat Jon

Romero beat Sanderson twice and Romero isn't even an Olympic gold medalist.

Jordan Burroughs >> Cael.

Also, Sanderson was far from the only guy DC lost to. His biggest disappointment was not medaling in the Olympics, and that had nothing to do with Sanderson. Very different scenarios here.

Sanderson did win the gold and was undefeated in doing so. Romero is a great wrestler who matched up tough against Sanderson.

Look at a guy like Kyle Dake the only wrestler to ever win 4 ncaa national titles in 4 different weight classes. Jordan Burroughs who didn't have an exceptionally stand out ncaa wrestling career bests him through and through.

Some guys match up well, some peak at different times. Burroughs happens to be peaking right now. Kyle Dake is a hair behind him though.

In all fairness, Yoel is a silver medalist and a tremendous freestyle wrestler. I believe Van Arsdale also beat Cael at one point, but that certainly doesn't diminish his greatness.

I don't think many people possess the tools to beat Jon so that's not as much as a knock on DC as it is the reality of 205. He beats a lot of HWs too.

As far as living in DC's head and being his new nemesis? Absolutely. He's taking up so much space in Cormier's thoughts he can go there for a quiet weekend vacation with his kids, baby momma and maybe a mistress.

Burroughs who didn't have an exceptionally stand out NCAA career? What? For the 2 years he was national champ, he went undefeated in all matches, and his first world title was in the same year as his last NCAA championship win, and accomplishments at the international level > NCAA wins in any case.

When people talk about Greco, Karelin is THE GUY. Sanderson is not THE GUY in freestyle, not even close. NCAA is nothing but a regional competition. DC's biggest disappointment wasn't losing to Sanderson multiple times, it's failing to win an Olympic medal.

My wife was abducted by aliens. I've snapped and gone crazy. Please help me I'm totally psychotic.

Cael retired early. Could have had a better career than Burroughs if he stuck with it

Yeah well, he didn't. He had a great college career, probably the greatest in US, but it's still a regional competition. There're probably Iranians with equally great regional careers too. In the end it's down to your international accomplishments, and while Cael is an Olympic gold medalist, the totality of his international achievements pales in comparison to JB.

Hard to beat a guy whose taller and more athletic

Cormier has heart but jones has the physical and mental advantages

I agree. The US isn't the best. Russia and Iran usually kick our ass. I wonder if Sadulaev will ever try MMA in the future

That's exactly it though. No doubt Cormier has mad heart and superlative skills. Against literally everyone else he's fought he's showed champion level growth, toughness and tenacity. Jon Jones is just better and not even by a massive margin, but he is. All the grit, all the toughness, embracing the grind, Jon has it too and more. It sucks because I love DC but he's just a hair below his arch enemy.
