Rumored Is it true that the Giant Taekwondo Olympian was cut from the UFC because Olympians cost more?

I doubt olympians cost more off the bat.

They gotta actually be good, or will attract eyes like Gable Stevenson.

Just being an olympian dont mean dick as far as what they sign you for I dont think. They gotta see other things in you, real potential, and theres got to be a big demand, like sign them so _________ doesnt get them.

Good or bad, Cutting someone after going 1-2 seems very early, especially an olympian.

june 2024:
"Ryan Garcia says he's heading to the UFC as his boxing career is on hold for a year"

Dana didn't let him in?
lol @ taking anything that guy says seriously

BTW if your suspended by the athletic commission, they arent gonna just let you fight in MMA instead. There's no way they would allow him to do that.

The UFC saw the writing on the wall and got rid of him the moment they could. He was already in his late 30s attempting a new combat sport where he was largely untested in any meaningful way. It didn't even require him fighting ranked opposition -- or indeed, actual grapplers -- before he was getting tossed around and mauled.

I mean on paper Acosta and Lane were both softball lay-ups at the time. Lane is one of the chinniest Heavyweights I've ever seen and relies on his athleticism and length to win striking exchanges -- something he wouldn't be able to safely do against Robelis. In his fight prior, Lane tried becoming a grappler to beat a pure kickboxer, thus leading to him rapidly gassing out and getting murdered in Round 2.

Acosta meanwhile has aged better than I frankly ever expected, but he was still more or less viewed as a pure volume boxer with little to no grappling.

Robelis was never going to amount to anything and seemed unable or unwilling to shore up what was a massive hole in his game. And yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he got brought on at a slightly higher rate than the standard 12/12, but who knows?

Any TKD practitioner or karateka jumping to MMA with no grappling or wrestling experience is behind the 8-ball right out of the gate.

A dry-humping or submission loss is inevitable for a fighter who isn't well-rounded if that's what the promoter wants. Give the fans a fight like Robelis and Cabbage Correira and he'll become a fan favourite. Would I rather watch that fight versus that last WMMA title fight? Fuck. Yes. No one wants Robelis as champ anyways, however we still need HW's to deliver and receive KO's.

Of all the divisions in the UFC, they fuck around with the least-populated division the most and make the strangest decisions. So yes, I think money did play a part in it. I could see Robelis asking a premium for his past credits, doesn't mean the UFC puts any merit into it or not.

But trying to streamline an already super-thin division to save a few dollars is fucking stupid. The UFC's just farming DWCS for cheap fighters than can be exploited, or the rare vets they feel are worth splurging on. I would've been down to watch Robelis and Verhoeven go at it in the octagon. Not for a title, just for a scrap. For now, it's slim pickings at 265lbs for all of the top fighters. Hopefully the UFC starts spending more to build up HW properly.

Honestly, Dana's bizarre sometimes when it comes to bringing in talent and his treatment of them. Dana loves bringing in guys that have a built-in audience and usually tries to use them as a stepping stone for his homegrown talent. I was stoked when the UFC signed Gegard Mousasi, and then the UFC lets him go on a 5 fight winning streak in 14 months finishing off Santos, Belfort, Hall and Weidman in a row, complete with a successful 4 fight calender year.

Sometimes Dana is just too Dana for his own good.

Dudes online say his TKD career was bullshit and he relied only on his size advantage.. kinda like bob sapp in kickboxing but in a pussified fencing.

Was never gonna happen.
It may not be the fight we want, but it's the fight we deserve.

Garcia teeing off on an O'Malley thinking he can stand a trade would be fun for as long as it lasted though. Ryan with 4oz'ers and no wrestling in the fight? Sean gets fucking battered senseless.
