Is it time to add some rounds to championship fights?

No, this is a terrible idea.
no, its an interesting idea that nevertheless probably wont happen.

it does suck when a fighter picks up momentum late in a fight, but loses devision because of earlier rounds. it all comes back to the eternal question, “if this were a fight to the death, which one of these guys is dying?” people wanna know, and the best way to know is a finish. when a fighter wins the first 4 rounds, but barely survives the 5th, you have to wonder what would have happened if the fight went on. obviously colby vs usman comes to mind, with colby picking up the last 2 rounds. yeah there is a chance it would have been different with 7+ rounds.

But we have to draw the line somewhere. 25 minutes is a long time already, long enough for most fighters to get a finish. even without a finish, most 25 minute affairs leave few questions unanswered. in most cases, 7 rounds would likely just prolong what we’ve already seen. so while it would be helpful in some cases, its not clearly beneficial to warrant making applicable in all title fights.

If anything, 3 minute-rounds so we don't have to watch 5 minutes of lay-and-pray. More rounds would be good.

Can't do it. It's not up to the UFC. It's a commission rule. No more than 25 min in a nite. That's why tournaments in a nite must have a 2 rd- fight first

I feel like we're getting too many close five rounders nowadays. That s ok when it's just a fight but it kinda takes something away when it's a fight for the title as in usman colby 2.
I mean you could clearly see that momentum was shifting towards colby and both fighters still had gas
in their tank.

Back in the old days, championship boxing matches were 15 three-minute rounds (45 minutes).

In the late 80s, championship boxing matches went down to 12 three-minute rounds (36 minutes).

The original UFC was no time limit, and then that changed to 5 five-minute rounds (25 minutes).

I do agree that UFC championship fights should be 7 five-minute rounds (35 minutes), which would also mirror the accepted time limits in boxing.

  • In boxing, again using three-minute rounds, non-title fights are 4-rounders and 6-rounders (12 minutes/18 minutes for beginners), then 8-rounders (24 minutes, intermediate), and 10-rounders (30 minutes, four full true pros).
  • I think the UFC, again using five-minute rounds, should have similar durations: 3-rounders (15 minutes for beginners), then 5-rounders (25 minutes, intermediate), then 6-rounders (30 minutes, for full true pros).

Championship UFC fights should be 7-rounders (35 minutes), just like championship pro boxing fights are 12-rounders (36 minutes).

Plenty of champs finished opponents within the 5 rounds, so why change it?

Reality is if you made it 7 rounds folks like Usman/Dustin/etc would just train for that length and still get the UD.

In boxing you get 11 one minute rest periods tho were in mma you would only get four. That's a big difference so if you wanted to mirror boxing you would have to do 12 three minute rounds

Fuck no. I don't know of any 5 round fight worth rewatching. They need to start taking away purse money after every round ends. And get rid of women.... or 12 yr old boys, whatever they want to be.

The first round should be 10 minutes long with 25 points to gain. All fights should be 3 rounds, the latter two would be 5 minutes, 10 points system. That would make it really, really fun. But I think we're getting spoiled already, UFC has put some crazy events recently.

In MMA, you can stall against the fence, lay on the ground and do nothing, etc.

In boxing you have to be constantly separated, constantly apart, no rest.

Due to the foregoing, I disagree they need to make MMA three-minute rounds, as they allow periods of inactivity to continue mid-fight.

I disagree, you can't just stall against the fence unless your opponent allows that to happen or you're a strong wrestler. It wouldn't work like that for all guys. Plus it would seem you are promoting stalling to make the fight longer which is counter intuitive to me. I'd rather not see seven rounds of stalling to conserve energy. There's plenty of stalling in boxing as well, it's just different than in mma. I'm not promoting the idea of three minute rounds either, I think five five minute rounds is plenty

They need to go until somebody quits.

To hell with these lame decisions.

I mean I get where you're coming from and could have watched another round or two of Colby Usman but on the flip side who the hell wanted to watch another round or two of Rose Weili, last round was Rose holding her down, doing nothing in terms of strikes or searching for a sub and Weili content to stay down there, seemingly happy to spend the entire round on her back with Rose in her guard, it was boring af.

I don't think we should. We've seen guys take really long breaks after a hard 5 rounds. I imagine it would be much worse if the rounds were increased

Why not just keep fighting until someone wins by two clear rounds.

I found myself wishing that was the case when Usman vs Covington ended, but it was a special case. Imagine 7 rounds of Usman-Masvidal 1 or WMMA.

Dear god no...cards would drag on until 3 AM
