Is it safe to wear my wedding ring while rolling?

I've never taken my wedding ring off since I got married. I keep it on for all kinds of activities like field sports, rock climbing, and now BJJ. The other night a couple of guys noticed my ring and seemed surprised that I didn't take it off when rolling.

What exactly can happen to me? I'm not looking for vague supposition, I'm looking for either a doctor's opinion or first- or second-hand experience.

My instinct is that if the worst that can happen is I have to get it (the ring, not my finger!) cut off at a hospital, I'm fine with that. Also, if I'm much more likely to get all kinds of worse injuries from doing BJJ anyway, I'm not too worried about adding another low probability one to the list.

Thanks!

I was told on my first day of class that no jewelery on the mat.... My wife is not happy bout that because I don't wear my ring anymore because I go to class 5 days a week..

You can hurt yourself as you stated above, but i'm sure you can and eventually hurt someone else 'somehow' rolling with a ring....

Lol at looking for a doctors opinion on sherdog.

I take mine off, but some of my teammates don't. It's up to you. It's not likely you would hurt someone/yourself but there is always a small chance.

I'm wondering the same thing. I just got married about a week ao and have worn my ring a few times on the may with no problems. I've been advised not to wear it because of it getting caught on things (my ring is loose because I have narrow fingers but huge joints) and also if the finger gets broken and swells they would have to cut it off. My buddy also mentioned he knows some guys who had the skin of their finger ripped off by the ring getting caught on a fence (they were cops hopping a fence in pursuit of people and the ring got caught on the fence). I don't know if the same thing could happen in grappling but I think I'm going to not wear mine in training.

Tape it up with some medical gauze before you roll. Most high street chemists / pharmacists should have it and it's easy enough to take off afterwards.

Maybe think about turning your ring in first as well unless it's just a flat band ring.

I wouldn't wear it...

Yeah never wear a ring while rock climbing.

The worst thing that could happen? How about snagging it on a rock as you slip and taking the meat of your finger clean off. Happened to a truck driver here in Iceland as he was getting out of his cab - caught the ring on the rear view mirror.

I wouldn't wear rings at all under any circumstances though. My advice is to put it on a chain and wear it around your neck, so you can take it off for rolling.

I was actually wondering about this last week, and I was wearing it up until I began working on collar chokes. I started thinking that if I shoot in for a quick lapel grip, the edges of my ring could possibly scratch someone.

So now I don't wear it during class.

I don't think you should wear it. I take mine off.

I've been involved with martial arts a lot longer than I've been involved with my wife. I love them both, but when it's time to train, the ring comes off.

A friend of mine was on a ladder one day cleaning his gutters. He slipped and fell no more than a couple of feet. His wedding ring, however, somehow caught on the rope. His finger tore off completely at the second knuckle.

I have to imaging that something similar could happen in a freak accident where your ring became tangled in your partner's gi. I take mine off whenever I roll.

well i mean how else are you gonna get all the ladies during your rolls??

Don't ask what can happen to you in training while wearing a ring ask what can happen to your training partners. Don't wear any hard and/or sharp objects in training even if it's just a plain ring - you might think there's no way you can hurt anyone with it but seriously that small thing can cut someone.

NO JEWELRY ON THE MAT.

In general, jewelry can be as much of a danger for others as for you. Even though you probably have a smooth wedding band, I'd still take it off before training.

meh, don't wear it. if your wife bitches at you, just get a tattoo of her to shut her up. i'm sure this fine artist is available...

My instructor and several of my teammates wear their wedding bands during training.

But one guy can't wear his anymore because his knuckle got too swollen from BJJ. Maybe the others can't take theirs off anymore for the same reason...

I completely agree.

It's already been stated here that i can hurt you while rolling, while rock climbing and getting in or out of a truck. I'd like to add it's a terrible cock block too.

On a serious note, I played football for 11 years. My fingers are mangled and the arthritis allows me to predict the weather -- according to the doctor anyway. When I got married, I wore a $49 copper or titanium (I forget but it was a cheap metal) the day of the wedding, took it off that night and haven't touched it since. In fact, we've moved twice since we got married. I don't even know (nor care) where the ring is though I think my wife has it in her jewelry box perhaps.

/marriage rant as I want to be polite and realize this is a grappling subforum

I'm married and I simply leave my ring at home before going to training. If I know I'll be going out after training, I bring it with and only put it on after training.

Even if I don't care about the risks to me, I think it's just courtesy and good sense to take it off so that I don't accidentially hurt any of my training partners (or even give them the impression that they might get hurt because of my ring).

I stopped wearing mine when a doctor I train with told me if your finger gets broken while you have a ring on it can cause some issues. I'm guessing it can cut of circulation to the bottom of your finger when it gets swollen. I'm not totally sure if that is true or not, but I started taking my ring off before class and hooking it on a chain in my locker until after class.
