Is height an advantage or disadvantage in grappling?

It depends on your style.

I'm 5'2", but my height is an advantage because of my aggressive takedowns and tight top game. Someone who's 6'3" could use that to have an effective guard.

Yeah I am 183 and 75ish kg and have relatively long legs and arms and short upperbody so my guard is good but my takedowns are worse so I usually pull guard.

I got good base from the top though but that has come from doing sports which demands a good balance since I was 6 yo.

I definitely dislike going against people who play a game created for their body-type, there is no better or worse body it is just about choosing the techniques and guards and game-strats which fits you.

stfu shorty, flying, riding the bus, going to the cinema is a chore if you are tall. try to get clothes if you are bigger then the norm.

For grappling it evens out and you can adapt the techniques or use the ones suited for your build

You shorties got to have some head on tit action growing up to:icon_chee

I am fortunate enough that I am tall but most of my opponents in SSHW are taller then me, easy level change for me if I go for a double:D

And I am the tall in open weight if I face anything but SSHWs

I am not evenly tall either, if my legs were proportionate to my back I'd be 6'5 or something now I am just 6'2-3

I'm 5'7" and have trouble doing a lot of those things. On account of me being stocky. On planes, my shoulders are too wide for the seats. Jeans are far too small or too long. It's terrible I tell ya:icon_cry2

height is an advantage, IMO. guys like ryan hall, with their unorthodox style, can suprise people with submissions, but being long limbed and unflexible is a disadvantage.

I'm 6"6 but v flexy. Being tall is great but the main problem ive found with grappling is double legs on smaller people (everyone). Just don't have the strength to do them effectively once my back bends to get low enough. I know my tekkers are awful but nothing seems to work.

It depends on the situation.

If the tall person is either based/ Low Stance or is explosive being somewhat low. They are good.
Or if the tall person is open, shorter person can explode in for a chance.
It is 50/50 , just depends on whos better and whos quicker.

and
edit: tall legs are great for arm bars when straightened, and keeping in guard/jumping guard and Spider Guard as well. Triangles I don't know, Short legged people are pretty good with triangles.

Wait what?

Being tall only becomes an advantage after you have trained for a while and know what you are doing. Otherwise you have lots of arms and legs for people to grab.

Wait what?

When someone with stubby legs works at and gets good at triangles, the minute they close the leg off you are screwed. That being said, long legs make triangles way easier. We have a dude at my school who is 6

Height/Length is a huge advantage in my eyes when it comes to getting out of someones guard or taking someone down with a good sprawl it can be insanely hard. However like everything theres pros/cons and just because your not the biggest guy doesn't give you an excuse to not train hard.

i'm 187 and fight at leve ( can make it natural without sauna if i diet for 4 weeks) and i look like medio +, it all depends, being bigger then the other guys will make you control them easier once you have them in your guard

My feeling long limbs are a huge advantage.

More reach for sweeps, and throws like uchi mata.

On the ground it means they can spread around to keep top control, have more leverage to bridge and have better hooks.

I feel like the current judo rules also give an advantage for tall people, as some attacks that involve getting lower are hindered. Think fireman's carry, double legs and other pick ups.

Meh, being small sucks. I rather small and stocky for my weight : 5'8 for 170 Lbs.

Learn to use the body you are given. There is a winning style for every body type, the athlete's job is to find it.
