Media Is Gaethje mentally broken?

Well, his ground game weaknesses have been exposed. Needs to go back to the drawing board. I think maybe he feft he could coast on his striking and take down defense. What would happen in the Oliveira fight? At this point i don't see him winning that one.

Who other than Khabib is gonna take him down though? Having your ground game "exposed" by the best ground fighter in the game doesn't necessarily apply to other potential opponents. He wrecked the shit out of four guys on the feet after having his striking "exposed" by Alvarez and Poirier.

If the Alvarez and Poirier losses didn't do it losing to Khabib won't.

I've noticed that his very few media appearances since 254 he doesn't seem all there to me. Seems a bit run down and demoralized. I don't remember seeing him like that after the losses to Poirier and Alvarez, maybe because they were both close blood and guts fights that he did very well in. Almost seems like he's a bit ashamed of his performance against Khabib.

Then the news comes out that Chandler is fighting Hooker. Did the UFC offer the fight to Gaethje? And if so, why did he turn it down? Could it be that his confidence has been shaken and he needs more time?

Well it was for the championship, must be hard to come so close to being a champ and then lose like that. Paulo was going crazy too after the loss, he was making a bunch of weird videos by himself about how he wasn’t 100% and bunch of other excuses.

Fighters, especially top ones are very prideful people. Being absolutely owned in 1 rd has to hurt. Some fighters never recover from it, like Marlon for example

He probably made a lot of money vs Khabib and is now enjoying his time off.

The UFC never wanted Chandler vs Gaethje. they want chandler to lose to a guy like Hooker as a statement that bellator is the B leagues

What interview are you talking about? I don't think I've seen any recently.

Anyway, nah, he should be fine. I'm betting he was excited to fight Chandler... seriously doubt he would have turned that down.

Justin and Trevor have been awfully quiet since their loss (yes I know he did a recent interview with Helen).

Most guys who lose a MMA world title fight decline shortly thereafter. On the way to the title shot, they're usually on a roll, & feel like a worldbeater. Then losing to the champ is a reality check, like "you're not good enough". When you lose before ever getting a world title shot, you chalk it up to "I can still get better, I'm still green", but when you lose a world title fight, your skills have realistically hit a plateau at that point, you were already basically as good as you're ever going to be.

Confidence is a huge thing, once you lose it it's hard to get back the mojo. There are exceptions of course, but if you look at the records of guys right after losing a MMA world title fight, most of them afterwards have much much much lower winning percentage, many go less than .500 afterwards

Good post.... fighting is hard as fuck mentally and physically. Different breed.

Because theres the ever lasting dent to his ego

He bounced back from two previous TKO losses. Seems like those would've been bigger dents to his ego. He always admitted that he'd be in trouble on the ground against Khabib.

every man has a breaking point, but I think Gaethje is pretty self-aware, and a pretty grounded individual, and has good people around him, coaches and family.

Hope he isn't, but he seems off to me. Maybe i'm reading too much into it. Was expecting Gaethje-CHandler as well, wonder why that didn't happen.
Because chandler doesn’t deserve that fight

nah. he's lost before.

Both of them fights where very competitive and hard fought, Khabib walked him down and had his way with him.

Nope, remember him running for his life while lightheartedly smiling during the Khabib fight, he knew the jig was up and saw humor in his own situation...
that’s not the behavior of a mentally broken individual

laughing is the proof of being embarrassed badly.

he's in a tough spot as porier or mcgregor would piece him up. Do Bronx would be a good fight, could go either way imo
