Is Frances McDormand a great unsung Hollywood gem?

I recently watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and it was a great movie; a great movie anchored by some excellent performances, one of which comes from Frances McDormand in the lead.

Mrs. McDormand (who happens to be married to Joel Coen, which I only learned recently) first came onto my radar with Fargo several years ago. I thought she was great in that film and have been keeping an eye out for her ever since.

She seems to me to be one of the most reliable actresses in terms of always delivering an interesting performance, but she really doesn't get much attention. You rarely hear her name mentioned in conversations about the best actresses working today.

What do you guys think about Frances McDormand? Am I right in thinking that she's underrated?

Well, she won one Oscar and got three more nominations. I think she's properly recognized for her abilities.

Maybe by fellow industry people, but do you think the common person on the street would even know her name if you held up a picture?

Pretty decent chance of them saying "lady from Fargo." No, she's not a major box office draw or Dicaprio level celebrity.

Hipsters would

Coen brothers are popular among hipsters

BTW I'm not saying they are bad directors at all.

She’s in more than one Coen Bros movie if I’m not mistaken.

Not sure I would call her a hipster badge but she may be slightly under recognized in the mainstream.

Billboards was a fantastic role for her , be shocked if she doesn't land a nomination for it , excellent actress

She seems cool, I’d shoot dice with her if I saw her on the street.

I’m actually surprised the only movies I’ve seen with her in it was Fargo and Hail Caesar.

You should check out Blood Simple.

It was both the Coen's first movie as well as her debut. It's an interesting little low-budget feature.

Haven't see 3 Billboards yet, but in my opinion, Frances McDormand is one of the best actors of all time, male or female. Without question one of the greatest actesses ever.

Her and Holly Hunter were the Coen Bros. muses.

Always had great performances in their films.

They all used to hang out and work with Bruce Campbell, the Raimi brothers, and Rob Tapert (The Evil Dead crew) too.

She's been in a bunch of movies but not many of them have really been mainstream successes. The most commercial film she was in is Transformers, so it's not really a surprise she isn't as widely recognised as someone like Cate Blanchett. I don't think she would have trouble landing parts in bigger films though

But by that criteria you would have shits lots of unsung Hollywood gems.
