Conor at Featherweight cannot be denied in terms of his level of success against high-level guys. He's finished Aldo, Mendes and Poirier, that is clearly some of the best talent at 145. Him at LW is a complete unknown in terms of high-level competition. Joseph Duffy isn't a elite guy in my opinion, but he's as high as it's got in terms of level at LW he's faced and we know what happened there.
So, why don't we take an example fighter very similar to Conor in terms of size. Let's say Anthony Pettis. Pettis has a slightly longer reach and is a little taller than McGregor, but he's a proven KO threat, who's primarily a striker, with zero wrestling offense/defence and has trouble with being controlled on the ground. Pettis is 100% more of a threat off his back, but hey, comparisons can never be perfect!
So let's say Anthony cut an extreme amount of weight (we all know he gets chubby out of season) and gets down to 145. He could definitely make it, as Conor cuts almost 20lbs to make 145, (just look at the Mendes cut). Are we honestly saying that Anthony wouldn't KO Dustin, Siver, Mendes and maybe even Aldo?
I cannot understand the credit that Conor gets of insurmountable proportion for winning a title. How many guys have won a title in the UFC, and how many with impressive finishes, so many I cannot count em'. Didn't Weidman KO the GOAT? Didn't Werdum choke out the soon to be HW GOAT? Didn't GSP submit the greatest WW ever? Didn't Jones walk through an all-time great?
Until Conor defends that title against top contenders I think this whole "Yeah, he lost, but he's still got a belt" talk has to stop. Yes, he has a belt, and he's done well to get there - but I think most guys who can make 145 from LW would emulate that success, I honestly, honestly think that! and that isn't a problem, but let's stop acting like the man is doing things that we've never seen before. The only thing he's done which is shocking is somehow believing that he could fight at WW - now that's setting levels!
