And this is one of the dilemmas of catch. Any tom dick and harry can call himself a catch expert. No quality control at all.
Before you go out screaming "there are bads/fakes everywhere" yes, but they called called out alot in bjj and other grappling styles. At least in Luta Libre you can get confirmation on if the person trained, under who, and how long.
Those loudmouths or their followers never shows up at the competitions. That's the easiest way to sort out the fakes. There's lots of competitions now in both UK and USA, no more excuses for them not to show up.
Lot of guys that failed at bjj, try to rebrand themself as catch wrestler .
I would say that they are trying to recreate a style due to the fact that they have no direct lineage to anyone.
Of course, I am talking about my country.
Biggest issue with catch wrestling today. It's usually those with a TMA background with zero grappling and don't want to put in all the hard work that's needed to become a great grappler. They try to cheat their way and find a fast way to make money by becoming catchwrestlers. Not a lot of them left now though when they and their students hide from the competitions. This is not also only happening in catch, it's same in the striking arts, people who fail at muay thai then just go to a neighbouring country and suddenly become lethwei champions.
folkstyle, while being a great art that I respect. Isn't catch.
I would rather folkstyle guys call folkstyle + subs something like combat folkstyle or submssions folkstyle. I mean they have no connection to people like funaki or billy robinson.
I do agree that folkstyle is very different but I do think that's the closest thing. People doing folkstyle will already have a good understandning of how the matwrestling in catch works.
