I personally think Blomkamp has taken the torch from Verhoeven. That is, the torch of most badass scfi films.

I recently purchased the Blomkamp trilogy on bluray and rewatched District 9, Elysium, amd Chappie, amd fuck, were they gritty and awesome. I love the fact that he stays with modern ghettos as a theme. Im sure it stems from his south african background.

That said, Blomkamp is predictable, he is not shown much in terms of variation, yet, he delivered 3 exceptional scifi films.

At this point, I still hold Verhoeven in higher regard for Starship Troopers and Robocop but Blomkamp delivers. I would even rank him higher than Christopher Nolan as far as modern cult directors go. And his grittiness is so refreshing compared to Nolan's PG-13 obsession.

Elysium was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Loved District 9 and really enjoyed Chappie though.

I'd be more inclined to say the new Shyamalan. Opened big with District 9 but Elysium was bad and Chappie was just terrible, and no signs yet of getting back to top form.

I will say he was TRYING to be the new Verhoeven by straight up copying plenty of Robocop in Chappie.

District 9 wasn't even that good.

Chappie was fun.

Chappie was fun.

I suppose parts of it were fun but I can't in good conscience call it anything but a terrible movie. Even if everything outside of the gang had been solid, which it wasn't, casting two non-actors from his favorite band to carry the film torpedoed it from the start.

The girl was alright honestly. I was drinking when I watched it though. It's on netflix now and I'll probably rewatch it this weekend.

Give it a try with no substances involved and let me know how far you make it.

I thought he went backward. District 9 was great, Elysium was fine, and Chappie is just a waste of time.

Total Recall>All Blomkamp films
Robocop>All Blomkamp films
Starship Troopers>All Blomkamp films

District 9 is better than Hollow Man.

That's it.

Elysium was the kernel of a good movie, but ruined by the most excruciating high school politics. Blomkamp knows he done fucked it up, too.

The immigration message in elysium was a bit strong for me, especially on the 2nd the second viewing.

That said, the action scenes were gritty as hell and the subtle use of robots was cool. Although I wondered why there weren't more robots doing the weapons manufacturing.

If that is the case, does that make Nicolas Refn the new David Cronenberg?
