Is being undefeated as great as it sounds?

Obviously remaining undefeated as a champ is quite an accomplishment but I do believe in the saying that says "if you didn't make any mistakes , you didn't try hard enough".

In Khabib's case I feel he could have defended that title a few more times and accomplish much more and potentially move up to WW to be force there as well. The fact that he did not makes me believe that he did not reach his maximum potential , even if it meant losing a couple.

I don't even want to discuss Jones as he is a PED cheat with two very questionable decisions and he is moving up where we going to see him tested.

Thoughts?

It would depend on the competition. It absolutely looks great but if it's against nobody's then who cares? Flip it though and have 5 or 6 losses and go on a 20 fight win streak people will always point to your loses. What does it all mean? People will perceive it however they want.

...Not sure if that's really applicable in MMA. In training sure, in actual fights? I don't think so.

I don't think Khabib reached his full potential as a fighter either, but that's mostly due to circumstances outside of his control - injuries, his father passing, etc.

I agree with both your points:
1) strength of schedule > flawless record
2) actual performance by the athlete > criticism by so-called fans.

No. Whether it's MMA, boxing, kickboxing, whatever it's always been understood that quality of competition > quantity of competition.

Nobody gives a shit how many people you beat. They care about who you beat.

It's only in recent years that certain groups of fans started harping about quantity being more important. Which is pretty funny considering they don't even have that number either.

If it's for real and on occasion it is.

The combat sports industry is built on misleading undefeated and close to undefeated records. To the contrary Jon Jones record is as real as it gets.

We're reaching a point where everyone in the UFC was undefeated or had a sexy record at one point. Sam Alvey was 11-1 once.

He lost to Cruz.

True, but if you find less people , the chances you eliminate the chance to fight more quality people.

Jones definitely fought high quality competition more so than Khabib, but the PED usage tarnishes his record plus he was gifted the Gus and Reyes decisions.

Never giving the haters the satisfaction of watching you lose is unparalleled greatness. In Khabib’s case, not only did he never lose, but his closest fight was a 30-27 unanimous decision lol.

It’s insane that I can discuss the top level of MMA and say that I’ve never seen Khabib look beatable in a fight.

Jon Jones, too, of course, but there’s some controversy surrounding his career.

He ducked the ONE fight his father wanted more than anything else. Even in tribute after he died. He wouldn’t step up against a 39 year old man, that had only one fight in the previous 7 years.

So.. Khabib can forever remain undefeated. But he knows.

If he’s fine with it.. Then so am I.

It really doesn't though. He tested positive for 1 fight against an opponent who only got that fight because Jones got in a car accident. DC has a far bigger asterisk next to his career than Jones because he owes his whole championship career to another mans misfortune(and the UFC's disdain for Bader/Davis).

The UFC weren't going to let GSP get away with trying to heist a third belt even if Khabib was interested.

If you're talking about Tony the universe just didn't want that fight. No one individual deserves total blame for that fight not happening.
