Im curious since a brown belt in karate means someone who has advanced techniques. Brown belts can compete with black belts in tournaments. same in TKD where the color is red instead.

Is BJJ similiar that brown belts are just black bels with less training time?

That is a good summary.

They have the requisite number of techniques, have their own game, and are clearly technically competent.

In my observation the difference between MOST brown and black belts is their teaching experience.

I think you'll notice a serious quality difference, on average.

You can find people who were black belts for 5+ years but it's rare to find brown belts who stayed at that belt for longer than 2 years.

I'm pretty close to getting my brown belt.

in what, chessjitsu?

Yeah, I've only trained with one brown belt that wasn't really good. But he was old and had put in his time, it was sort of honorary.
