Is a 9 year old too young to be left in a car?

Not 9... But here is the local law.

  • Law
Texas Penal Code Section 22.10 makes it a Class C misdemeanor to leave a child under seven years old unattended in a car for more than five minutes. The child must also not be supervised by someone at least 14 years old.

  • Consequences
If a child is injured while left in a car, the charges may be more serious. If a child older than seven is left alone and is harmed, the person could be charged with felony child abandonment or child endangerment.

  • Investigation
Child Protective Services (CPS) will investigate leaving a child unattended in a car as a form of neglectful supervision.

    • Risk
Texas has hot summers, and it only takes 10 minutes for a car to heat up by 19 degrees. The risk of a child developing heatstroke or dying in a hot car is high.

If you or a loved one has been arrested for leaving a child in a vehicle, you should contact an experienced criminal defense attorney immediately.

Well they said it was 80 degrees, which in the car it could be 90-100 degrees and left him in there over an hour. To a point where the kid went looking for him.

I don't know if he should go to jail for it or get a felony but you shouldn't leave a 9 year old in the car by themselves for over an hour. Even if it was cooler, I don't trust other people and a 9 year old can be convicted to open the door by a stranger.

These days, yes!
100%.
CPS may take your kid away, if you get caught leaving them alone.
I begged them to take mine, but they always brought them back...

Had this done to myself when I was a kid, and with my kids on very rare occasions. Just depends on the circumstances. Though it isn't that bad at 9 years old imo

As long as there's no dog with him

Leave mine in the car for a few minutes with the dog here and there. He's fine he's always within eyesight and no one is going to take the pitbeasts baby without a problem.

9-y.o. me, back in the day, was much safer being alone than a 15-y.o. of today.

I'll be honest. I don't see anything wrong. 9 years old is not a toddler. He can get out by himself if he's too hot. I've been left in a car by myself plenty of times when I was a little kid

Watching the video now, and I'd say the issue is leaving the 9 year old alone in public is the bigger issue.

The kid was obviously able to get out of the car, so thats not the issue.

The cops making it seem its the major issue are wrong. As for the 'its 80' wouldn't say thats worth arresting him over, in situations like this the cops showing up are enough to scare a minorly-negligent father straight.

Edit - Skipped ahead to see he was arrested, which isn't a surprise because this video wouldn't be worth much discussion. Obviously overcharged with 'cruelty to children,' a good lawyer would get him off.

When I was a kid I always hated shopping with my parents because they'd take so long to do anything, so I'd always tell them to leave me in the car and I'd just read my books or whatever

I remember a few times I was sat there chilling, and then the fucken car alarm went off. So I'd have everyone staring at me while I was trying to read with an alarm blaring in my ear. One time it happened, and it was an hour before my parents came back out and shut it off
