is 49 too old to start learning judo?

Just to throw this out there. Aiki jujutsu is a generic umbrella term, much like "karate". There are Many arts under this umbrella and they are all Very Very old and well documented as used on battle fields. They are refered to as Koryu.

If you want to learn more about Koryu arts go to this website. http://www.koryu.com/

Enjoy judo mate.

Not in my book, no.

Keep in mind though that grappling is much more taxing than striking in terms of injuries etc, and out of grappling sports, judo will probably be much rougher on you than BJJ for example.

So if you just want to learn how to fight plus stay fit, I'd recommend you to start boxing or maybe Muay Thai instead. You'll probably get more bang for the buck that way so to speak, because you'll still develop very good fighting skills and get very fit but you won't go around with as many bruises (which take ages to heal for a middle aged man). For me as a 35 years old boxer + judoka, that's my experience at least.

If you think that you will enjoy the sport I would strongly recommend you to go ahead though. For whatever reason, I think judo is much more playful and "fun" than boxing, and chances are that you will love the sport. Just make sure to take it easy and not get hurt.
