Basically I want to know if I am too old to compete. My background is about 6 years of full contact karate, a year of muay thai and 6 months of boxing. My ttd is pretty good and I took to the wrestling part pretty well. I want to start bjj in 6 months. Basically I'm a good kicker. What I meant by that is I have a nice round kick to the legs and body, a real nice front kick to the head and body, a nice jab and a good cross. Thats about it. I could use work on hooks and combos aswell.

If you have to ask probably. But not for the age.

For what? To go professional? Be a champion? Win amateur fights?

Didn't Cormier start later?

I'd say you've still got plenty of time to fight and win some amateur fights if that's what you're interested in. As a career it's very late and probably not a good idea but not out of the realm of possibility I guess.

amatuer mma fights.

I think starting at 28 is fine for someone who doesn't have a lot of wear & tear on their body. I've always heard prime years are 28-32, but im sure that varies from person to person. And in your case, it's not like you're starting from scratch.

No it's a D level pseudosport. If you have some natural athleticism and a decent work ethic you can do well.

I didn't start boxing until I was 30. But I also went into it knowing that I wasn't going to become a pro nor did want to. I've been going strong over the past 6 years now. Still spar regularly and had two amateur fights before I turned 35.

For ammy? You're good. Your time is limited to become a "world champion," but definitely game for amateur fights.

Just make sure you have competent coaches, good work ethic, and can take a punch.

Thanks for the input man. Yeah I dont have any aspirations to be a world champion. I just want to get in shape, lose some weight, and compete. I enjoy sparring alot.

It depends on your life. Do you have kids? Wife? Serious GF? A career instead of a job? Other responsibilities? These things all get in the way of training like the 19 year old kids do, and hours away from the gym are hours of experience you're not bringing with you into the cage when you fight.

I've been to plenty of local MMA bouts (including Joe Lauzon when he was a nobody) and the talent level is not that spectacular. Also, 28 isn't that old for life in general; you're in the prime of your athleticism. Yes it will go downhill slightly, soon, but you're really fucking young all things considered.

Edit: Just googled it out of curiosity, and the first link I clicked said until about 35 is when you have 100% of your physical potential (i.e. you're still exercising.) That sounds about right to me, as someone who is over 35.

Way too fucking old. Now go do something more age appropriate. Like opening up an ice cream stand.

haha I'm pretty irresponsible. seriously tho no kids single and I have a regular job.

You'll be fine, find a decent gym and commit to it, and you should be on your way. If you have a good coach and team, its possible you could lose, but not get beat up. At the end of the day, we're all in for the exp. as ammy competitors. Your goal of getting fights as an amateur is perfectly reasonable. It might be a bit tougher if you want to be the #1 ammy in the country / state, but it looks like you're not looking to do that.

Is it fuck too old. I've started at 32, fair enough I trained Thai from 20-25 years of age, but have had a 6-7 year break away from combat sports. Go for it!
