The fight card for Invicta Fighting Championships 16 has changed following injuries to two fighters.

Angela Hill (3-2) and Aspen Ladd (2-0) will step in as replacements for Alexa Grasso (7-0) and Amberlynn Orr (0-0), respectively.

Hill made her promotional debut earlier in 2016, knocking out Alida Gray at Invicta FC 15 in January. The UFC veteran will take on former title challenger Stephanie Eggink.

The unbeaten Ladd will move up from flyweight to take on fellow undefeated fighter Kelly McGill in a bantamweight match-up. Ladd has scored back-to-back finishes inside the Invicta cage, most recently submitting Amanda Bobby Cooper at Invicta FC 14 in September of last year.

Invicta FC 16 will see recently crowned atomweight champion Ayaka Hamasaki (12-1) make her first title defense against the hard-charging Amber Brown (6-1). In the co-main event, the promotion will crown an interim flyweight champion as Brazilians Vanessa Porto (18-6) and Jennifer Maia (12-4-1) face off.

The event takes place from the Trinidad Pavilion at Tropicana Las Vegas on Friday, March 11. It will stream live and exclusively on UFC Fight Pass beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET.

The updated fight card for Invicta FC 16 can be found below:

Atomweight Title: Ayaka Hamasaki (12-1) vs. Amber Brown (6-1)
Interim Flyweight Title: Vanessa Porto (18-6) vs. Jennifer Maia (12-4-1)

According to Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp, the interim flyweight bout was proposed by current champ Barb Honchak (10-2), who told the promotion she didn’t want to hold up the title after relocating from Missouri to the Pacific Northwest. It’s unclear when Honchak will return to defend the belt.

Weird

My picks in bold
  • Champ Ayaka Hamasaki vs. Amber Brown – for atomweight title
I just feel experience and overall better technical skill should carry Hamasaki through
  • Vanessa Porto vs. Jennifer Maia – for interim flyweight title
Porto beats anyone not named Honchak in this division
  • Stephanie Eggink vs. Alexa Grasso
Eggink is tough and lanky, and tricky with submissions, but I feel that Grasso is quicker, better on the feet, and hasn't had nearly as long of a layoff.
  • Irene Aldana vs. Jessamyn Duke
Duke hasn't shown anything of note in a long while. Aldana by TKO
  • DeAnna Bennett vs. Roxanne Modaferri
Bennett is just flat out tough, and is back a the weightclass she belongs at. I think she wins, but I'll be cheering for Roxie
  • Jinh Yu Frey vs. Herica Tiburcio
I think I chose with my heart on this one. Both of these ladies hit hard, although Tiburcio has the speed advantage.
  • Sarah D’Alelio vs. Andrea Lee
Last time Lee fought someone experienced, she lost. She needs to keep fighting people around her experience level.
  • Andrea Kelly McGill vs. Amberlynn Orr
The Just Bleed God is already salivating at the though of Killer Kelly's return.
  • Sarah Click vs. Ashley Greenway
No idea on these two.

Greatly anticipating Stephanie Eggink vs. Alexa Grasso and Jinh Yu Frey vs. Herica Tiburcio!

My picks in bold
  • Champ Ayaka Hamasaki vs. Amber Brown – for atomweight title
  • Vanessa Porto vs. Jennifer Maia – for interim flyweight title
  • Stephanie Eggink vs. Alexa Grasso
  • Irene Aldana vs. Jessamyn Duke
  • DeAnna Bennett vs. Roxanne Modaferri
  • Jinh Yu Frey vs. Herica Tiburcio
  • Sarah D’Alelio vs. Andrea Lee
  • Andrea Kelly McGill vs. Amberlynn Orr
  • Sarah Click vs. Ashley Greenway

  • Champ Ayaka Hamasaki vs. Amber Brown – for atomweight title - Agreed. Probably an UD.
  • Vanessa Porto vs. Jennifer Maia – for interim flyweight title - Well, Porto surprised me on her last bouts, ill take her by TKO
  • Stephanie Eggink vs. Alexa Grasso - Grasso UD all the way.
  • Irene Aldana vs. Jessamyn Duke - Aldana by first round TKO.
  • DeAnna Bennett vs. Roxanne Modaferri - I believe in Modaferri... And by this, UD.
  • Jinh Yu Frey vs. Herica Tiburcio - Tiburcio UD
  • Sarah D’Alelio vs. Andrea Lee - Agreed here. D'Aelio will get this one.
  • Andrea Kelly McGill vs. Amberlynn Orr - Not familiarized with none of those girls.
  • Sarah Click vs. Ashley Greenway - Same thing.

I'm really stoked about the card. A lot of my favourites and just otherwise interesting fights in there - and two titlefights without a Cyborg beatdown. Heck, this is by far the most interesting card in all of MMA of the near future for me. Gonna be a long night once again to watch it live :) *victim of timezones*

What's the deal with Barb Honchak now? An interim title just cause she can't be arsed to defend the title? Like mentioned above - weird...

Anyway, go Roxy!!

People are weighing in with picks already, so I will throw my hat into the ring as well (with some reasons behind the picks)

  • Champ Ayaka Hamasaki vs. Amber Brown – for atomweight title
I love Amber Brown and have been a fan since she fought here in Japan. I think she could be champ with some more experience. But, she has shown a susceptibility to getting taken down and Ayaka is a takedown machine. I expect Amber will spend a lot of the fight on her back and just get frustrated that she can't unleash her power. With time, more training, and better takedown defense, I think Amber Brown (and possibly Yu Frey) will become a major force in the division.
  • Vanessa Porto vs. Jennifer Maia – for interim flyweight title
It's been a while since either fighter has appeared in the Invicta cage. Ring rust may play a factor. Maia is consistently good and can trade with great strikers. I think she sometimes gets frustrated when she can't implement her game plan (and gets stuck in the clinch, against the cage, or on her back for extended periods of time). Porto is a very smart fighter who usually comes in with a great game plan. She has high fight IQ and knows what she has to do to win. Many of her losses are just to bigger fighters back in a time when it was hard for female fighters to get fights (with fighters the same size). I don't see her losing to another 125er. And, of course, Porto has already beaten Maia once.
  • Stephanie Eggink vs. Angela Hill
Eggink has the perfect style to take Hill down and triangle/armbar her in the first round. If the Eggink who fought Kankanpaa shows up, I think she will get an early finish. But, this fight is hard to call because of Eggink's long layoff and the nature of her "injury" (pregnancy). Will she be back in complete fighting shape? Will the long layoff be too much to overcome? Ultra-props to Hill for taking this fight. Even if she loses, it will be a great learning experience for her. I think Hill can win if she lights Eggink up early with power shots...but most likely, Stephanie will get her on the ground and use those lanky limbs to wrap up her prey (and get a submission win).
  • Irene Aldana vs. Jessamyn Duke
I think Jessamyn knows she has a lot to prove and will do better than most people expect. But, I think Irene will come out on fire and wanting to get back into title contention. I expect that Aldana will come out firing fast...and this will overwhelm Duke
  • DeAnna Bennett vs. Roxanne Modaferri
Bennett back at the weight she should be fighting at will be tough to beat. But, her striking was exposed somewhat in her last fight and I think this will give Roxy some added confidence. I expect this fight to go the distance with Bennett having enough TD defense and ground defense to stay out of trouble and outpoint Roxy in the stand up

  • Jinh Yu Frey vs. Herica Tiburcio
Like Amber Brown, I am a Yu Frey fan and believe she has the potential to be champ one day. I also believe she won the Esquibel fight. But this is a significant step up in competition. Tiburcio is just so fast and so strong for her size, I fear she will overwhelm Jinh early, especially on the ground. Hamasaki had the defensive chops to weather the Tiburcio storm early and methodically grind out a victory. I am not convinced that Yu Frey has the same level of skill yet. But, should be a valuable learning experience for Yu Frey as it will show her where she needs to improve and how much she needs to improve to compete at the highest level.
  • Sarah D’Alelio vs. Andrea Lee
Another tough one to call. I think D'Alelio at 125 must be like the anaconda in The film "Anaconda"; super fast in it's ability to wrap up it's prey and constrict. If Roxy could take down and control KGB (in the 2nd and 3rd rounds), I'd have to guess Sarah can as well. But, I also know that KGB has really worked to improve that area in her game. Obviously, if she can keep it standing, she should cruise to victory. But, ultimately, Lee (a fighter I have invested in) has been a slow starter at times and has lacked the killer instinct to get stoppages (no way Sinn should have gone to decision)...as though she is still pacing herself for 10-round Muay Thai bouts (even in 3-round MMA bouts). Even if she scores some early damage against D'Alelio, if she doesn't get the stoppage and lets Sarah hang around in this fight, it could go south on her in the later rounds.
  • Andrea Kelly McGill vs. Aspen Ladd
Been really impressed with McGill. Now I see a reason to bet against her. Aspen has been primed for a while to be the next big thing - though apparently she'll try to do that at BW now instead of SW. Who knows how the bulking out went, but Aspen has a phenomenal skill set for her age. This could turn into a great fight between two very exciting prospects.
  • Sarah Click vs. Ashley Greenway
Don't know enough about either fighter to give a detailed analysis of the fight. But I know Greenway's only ammy losses were decision losses to Torres and Aldridge; that tells me she is tough and can at least hang with top talent. So, I'm picking her.

Overall, much harder to pick them this time. But even if all of my picks turn out to be wrong, I am so looking forward to watching this card. Many of my favs are fighting; and they have some tough fights ahead of them.

P.S. Updated my picks to cover last-minute line-up changes

My last name is spelled wrong. It's Modafferi.

but I'm so excited to be fighting! DeAnna is tough!

Seriously man, I longed for the day when we can finally watch Invicta again without being disgusted by a horrible mismatch in the main event.

Card is stacked but its just missing that big main event that really draws fans in.

When Cyborg fights or when they had Karate Hottie that got people to pay attention, this card is top to bottom loaded with their best but it doesnt have the Cyborg fight to get more eyes on it.

If they put Cyborg/Tonya super fight it would be perfect.

Rooting for the Brown Bunny. She trains out of FIT NHB and those fighters always bring it.

Invicta FC 16 lineup set

ayaka-hamasaki-invicta-fc-13.jpg

Following a successful event this past month, Invicta FC showcases its next all-female fight card on March 11 in Las Vegas. An atomweight title fight between reigning champion Ayaka Hamasaki and top contender Amber Brown headlines Invicta FC 16, and the card features eight additional matchups in three weight classes.
Hamasaki (12-1) dropped down to 105 pounds in 2014 following her lone career setback, against upcoming UFC title challenger Claudia Gadelha, at Invicta FC 6. She posted back-to-back wins in Japan against former Jewels champion Naho Sugiyama and current Deep Jewels titleholder Mei Yamaguchi before returning to the Invicta FC cage this past year. At Invicta FC 13 in July, Hamasaki captured the atomweight belt with a thrilling five-round split-decision victory over Herica Tiburcio.

Brown (6-1) has enjoyed a steady rise up the 105-pound rankings during the past three years thanks to victories over some of the division’s top prospects. After suffering her lone professional loss in a short-notice strawweight bout against recent Deep Jewels and WSOF title challenger Emi Fujino, Brown moved down to atomweight and has since compiled a solid four-fight winning streak. She demolished Catherine Costigan at Invicta FC 13 in July and most recently submitted short-notice replacement opponent Shino VanHoose at Invicta FC 15.

With flyweight champion Barb Honchak sidelined, Invicta FC officials have elected to create an interim title that will be up for grabs in the Invicta FC 16 co-feature. Vanessa Porto (18-6), who dropped a five-round decision to Honchak at Invicta FC 5, faces off against Brazilian compatriot Jennifer Maia (12-4-1) for the Invicta FC interim flyweight title.

Porto is 3-2 under the Invicta FC banner and has racked up three straight victories since the loss to Honchak. In her most recent appearance for the promotion, Porto avenged a loss by defeating Roxanne Modafferi at Invicta FC 12 in April. Maia has not fought for Invicta FC since late 2014, when she dropped a controversial decision to DeAnna Bennett. She returned home to Brazil and won three straight fights, including two by knockout, this past year.

Also confirmed for Invicta FC 16 is a strawweight bout between would-be title challenger Alexa Grasso (7-0) and Stephanie Eggink (4-2). Grasso is one of the brightest prospects in the division, and she has won all three of her Invicta FC bouts, but injuries have twice derailed plans for her to challenge for Invicta FC title gold. Eggink had her three-fight winning streak snapped by Katja Kankaanpaa, who submitted her with a fifth-round brabo choke at Invicta FC 8.

Grasso’s teammate, Irene Aldana (5-2), will also be in action at Invicta FC 16. The popular bantamweight meets “The Ultimate Fighter 18” competitor Jessamyn Duke (3-3), who returns to Invicta FC after struggling in the UFC. Aldana has knocked out or submitted her opponents in all five of her wins, and she looks to rebound from a loss to Invicta FC bantamweight champ Tonya Evinger in July. Duke seeks redemption after suffering three straight defeats in UFC bouts.

In other Invicta FC 16 action, Modafferi (18-12) and Bennett (8-1) face off in a flyweight contenders’ bout. Modafferi was on the cusp of a title shot until her loss to Porto in April, but she bounced back with a third-round TKO victory at Invicta FC 14. Bennett struggled with the weight cut to 115 pounds during her brief run as a strawweight, and she has benefited from two contentious decision wins in the Invicta FC cage. After coming up short in a strawweight title bout this past month, Bennett now moves back up to 125 pounds.

Rounding out the Invicta FC 16 card, former atomweight champion Herica Tiburcio (9-3) faces Jinh Yu Frey (4-1). Additionally, highly touted flyweight prospect Andrea Lee (4-1) squares off against Sarah D’Alelio (8-6), who makes her 125-pound debut. Kelly McGill (2-0) puts her undefeated record on the line against multi-time amateur champion Amberlynn Orr (0-0), who makes her pro debut as a bantamweight following an 11-1 run as an amateur. In the strawweight opener, Ashley Greenway (0-0) meets fellow pro debutant Sarah Click (0-0).

Invicta FC 16’s Amber Brown: Inspiring Others On Her Path to Gold
Amber Boone
February 24, 2016

BrownMandelSherdog.jpg

It seems like the whole country is anti-bullying. They don’t want the bullies to be active on the playground, the schools or even the internet. But there is one bully that every American should consider rooting for, and even cheering on. No, I am not talking about Donald Trump.

I’m talking about Amber “The Bully” Brown. Brown got her nickname way before the anti-bullying crusades began. And you’ll be glad to know it’s not because she is mean. Well, outside the cage.
Brown started boxing in 2009. Back then, there just weren’t many opponents, so she faced a lot of younger and bigger girls. But Brown didn’t care. Her style is to press forward and push the pace. She went undefeated and picked up four amateur wins. Her teammates started calling her a bully for beating up on the young’uns.

Brown just wanted to get in shape after her daughter was born. That’s why she started boxing. However, the competition and adrenaline were just too much to resist, so she started to compete. After such success as an amateur boxer, Brown decided to go pro. She lost her debut bout. It turned out that her loss was MMA’s gain.

Just a few months after her pro boxing debut in 2012, Brown decided to go pro in MMA. In November 2012, “The Bully” made her pro MMA debut. She won her first two fights and then went to Japan to face Emi Fujino in May 2013. Fujino was among the top strawweights. She already had 11 wins and six losses. Brown wasn’t fazed. She gave it her all, but she fell victim to a vicious neck crank in the second round. (Fujino’s previous fight was a loss to Ayaka Hamasaki — remember that.)

Since Brown’s loss to Fujino, she has been on a tear. She went right back to Japan and Pancrase, where she scored an armbar against Kikuyo Ishikawa. Then, Invicta FC came calling and gave Brown the chance to compete in the atomweight division. She beat Liz McCarthy by split decision in a very entertaining fight.

Then Brown destroyed Catherine Costigan. “The Bully” sunk in a rear-naked choke in the first round. In January, she was slated to face Lisa Ellis, another well-known veteran with excellent skills. Unfortunately, Ellis got really sick and was unable to train. She had to pull out of the fight. Shino VanHoose was tapped to step in, and she fell victim a first-round guillotine at the hands of Brown.

Brown was vocal about wanting a title shot after her bout with Costigan. After she ran through VanHoose, the case had been made. In March, Brown will face the current atomweight Invicta FC champion, the aforementioned Hamasaki. Talk about interesting twists of fate.

“One word: excited,” Brown told Combat Press. “Well, I am training hard, looking forward to facing Ayaka. After I beat Catherine, they wanted me to have one more fight before I earned the title shot. I did it and was really happy when they called.

“It’s truly amazing to see the hard work pay off and to get here in a fairly short amount of time. I feel great. I’ve got a ton of respect for Ayaka. She’s another legend and has been fighting a long time. She has fought a lot of top-level opponents, but I feel really good about the match-up. I know it’s not going to be easy. She is tough. But I know, when I am at my 100 percent, that I can beat anybody out there. So, yeah, I am excited to go out there and showcase my skills.”

If you had some parents who needed in-home health care, you’d probably not want a bully. Unless that “bully” was Brown.

“I wasn’t fighting enough last year, so I needed to supplement my income,” said Brown. “I took a position as a caregiver for a small, private company. The family is awesome. They support my fighting, watch all my fights, and work with my schedule to accommodate training and time off for fights. They are amazing.”

Brown likes the gig so much that she might even consider becoming a nurse after her fighting career is done.

And what if your mom was known as a bully? Can you imagine the looks the other PTA moms might give? Luckily, Brown is only a bully inside the cage.

“I really am one of the nicest people you’ll meet in everyday life,” said Brown. “But I am really proud of my nickname because that is my fight style. It’s aggressive. It’s in-your-face. I love to move forward and keep the pressure on. I want to be known for dominating everyone I face.

“I want to get this belt and then I want to run the division. Since they started the division, the belt has been passed around for one reason or another — more than the other belts. I want to take the division down and dominate it. Then, because I know I can compete at that level, maybe I will move up to 115 [pounds] and get that belt and run that division.

“I want to be an inspiration for other fighters and other girls. And that is what really motivates me. I want other women to be able to look up to me and see that hard work really does pay off and that you can make your mark. You don’t realize how much of a role model you can be. It really inspires me.

“We go to stores around here, and there are some regulars who will ask us how the training is going. I had some folks come up when the title fight was announced, and they were so happy for me. I look like a fighter, so it might not even be that they recognize me at first, but we get to talking and then it comes up. So far, nobody has screamed, ‘Oh my god, there’s the ‘Bully!’ [laughs]. Not yet, anyway.”

Brown is lucky. She and her husband have been together for 11 years. Joe Blake is her partner, her best friend and her boxing coach. Brown, her daughter and her husband spend a lot of time together in the gym. This is her family and these are her loves. She doesn’t sound so bad now, does she? Just don’t step in the cage with her. That’s when the bully comes out.

Invicta FC returns next month to Las Vegas for a championship double-header with atomweight and flyweight titles on the line. But this time, the promotion has its own weekend.

After Invicta FC 13 piggybacked on this past July’s blockbuster UFC 189 event, Invicta FC 16 hits Sin City on March 11, a week after UFC 196 on March 5.

Trindad Pavilion at Tropicana Las Vegas hosts the UFC Fight Pass-streamed card.

In the atomweight division, former Jewels champ Ayaka Hamasaki (12-1) attempts her first Invicta title defense opposite Amber Brown (6-1), who’s won her past four including three straight bouts in the promotion.

In the flyweight division, an interim title bout between Vanessa Porto (18-6) and Jennifer Maia (12-4-1) co-headlines the event. Both have won their past three fights. Porto is coming off recent wins over ex-Bellator champ Zoila Frausto and UFC vet Roxanne Modafferi while Maia has won three on the regional Brazilian circuit.

Additionally, strawweight prospect Alexa Grasso (7-0), who’s courted UFC interest as a potential signee, takes on Stephanie Eggink (4-2).

The full card for Invicta FC 16 includes:
  • Champ Ayaka Hamasaki (12-1) vs. Amber Brown (6-1) – Atomweight Championship
  • Vanessa Porto (18-6) vs. Jennifer Maia (12-4-1) – Interim Flyweight Championship
  • Stephanie Eggink (4-2) vs. Alexa Grasso (7-0)
  • Irene Aldana (5-2) vs. Jessamyn Duke (3-3-1)
  • DeAnna Bennett (8-1) vs. Roxanne Modafferi (18-12)
  • Jinh Yu Frey (4-1) vs. Herica Tiburcio (9-2)
  • Sarah D’Alelio (8-6) vs. Andrea Lee (4-1)
  • Andrea Kelly McGill (2-0) vs. Amberlynn Orr (0-0)
  • Sarah Click (0-0) vs. Ashley Greenway (0-0)

Sooo, looks like Livia Renata was right...Grasso indeed ducked her (either that, or she's been told to by powers that be)

Sooo, looks like Livia Renata was right...Grasso indeed ducked her (either that, or she's been told to by powers that be)

Souza is a walking Brazilian sterotype, always talking trash. Grasso hasn't fought in a year now, wouldn't make any sense to put her in with the champ straight away. Injuries happen. Souza, as a Brazilian, ought to know that pretty well.

Eggink is no pushover. Her last fight she almost pulled a Chael Sonnen, until Kankaanpaa pulled a Silve-esque come from behind submission

Andrea "KGB" Lee and Amberlynn Orr did some training together recently.

Shayna Baszler says that this is what happens when she tries to mimic Jessamyn Duke's opponent, Irene Aldana, during sparring.

My picks in bold
  • Sarah D’Alelio vs. Andrea Lee
Last time Lee fought someone experienced, she lost. She needs to keep fighting people around her experience level..

I think you are reading too much into Andrea Lee's loss to Roxanne Modafferi (Andrea's only pro loss).

For one thing, Andrea took the fight on short notice.

For another thing, Andrea was not well going into that fight. In Andrea's own words:
“I love Roxanne,” Lee began. “She is such an awesome person and it was an honor to fight her. I didn’t get to perform that night at my best because a few days earlier I was drilling tech sparring to break a sweat and the guy I was working with caught me right on the ear and ruptured my ear drum. Man that hurt, I couldn’t hear very well after and then I got an ear infection and the night of the fight I had fever. It sucked. I wasn’t about to pull out because I wasn’t feeling well, I was already the replacement for her first opponent and all of my friends and fans were there to see me fight, so I wasn’t about to let them down. I think that if her and I ever do rematch it will be a lot better than the first time.”

http://www.mmalatestnews.com/andrea-kgb-lee-talks-womens-mma-invicta-fc-16-and-more/

As Roxanne herself wrote on her blog: "Who fights with a busted ear drum and wins?"

http://roxannemodafferi.net/RBlog/2014/12/

I pick Andrea "KGB" Lee to beat Sarah D'Alelio.
