I was watching a horror movie and came up with this. Everyones cell phones were dying. Next you know they are going to be in the dark and then dead.

What if you could make a cell phone case that basically had a wind up charger built into it. It would not be much bigger than a normal cell phone case at all, and the basic electronics to create such a thing is pretty simple.

Do you think there is a market for such a thing?

i'd buy that for a dollar!

but for reals not that bad of an idea, if it doesn't exist. but it likely won't make you rich

Someone is going to steal your great idea now and become rich.

It's a great idea and a great tool for the consumers, but Cell Phone companies would not want you to make this because it would take away from their profits.

Remember older generations of the 1900's - 1980 - they built things that last!

Well after some time Corporations realized it's better to make things cheap because they would be able to make more money off the consumers with "Updates" or "Replacements".

Just think about the iPhone -- how many times have you seen people drop their phone and their glass shatters ......a 500 dollar phone that drops 2 feet and the phone's touch screen glass shatters and spiders out. Dont think that was by accident.

Apple purposely built the phone with ease to break glass in order for consumers to either send in their phone and have it fixed for 100+ bucks or to just buy a new phone to solve this issue.

In this modern age of buying and selling, Corporations are not looking to help the consumers get a reliable product instead they are looking at ways to make as much money as possible from the consumer if that means making cheap products in order to get a higher profit then that is the route they will take.

They already have something similar, my bro in law (who's a tech guy). Has a morphie (or mophie) case that works as a back up battery.

When your phone's battery gets low, this thing kicks in and either charges it to full, or works as back up battery.

They have this of those emergency lights/radios, they have a windup function that charges up the lights/radio or it can power up anything connected through USB.

Thanks for the idea bro! I've started stripping an old alternator for parts and should have a prototype up and running in a few hours.

Actually nope your idea would never work. With copper wire, magnets and the other required shit you'd triple the weight and triple the size of any phone case at the very least.

Ain't nobody got time for that

Stupidest idea ever, do u even electrical engineer bro?

a watch company wanted to put the same type of kentic movement like wid up watch.

March 13, 2009 Swiss watchmakers Ulysee Nardinhave teamed up with European company SCI Innovations to develop the world’s first mechanical mobile phone, which utilizes the kinetic energy provided by a highly specialized Ulysse Nardin rotor.

Based on an automatic watch powered by its rotor, the "Chairman" contains an integrated battery that uses the kinetic energy provided by the rotor’s motion. There's not a great deal of detail available at this stage, but it seems that this energy is used to supplement the battery instead of replacing it completely. The Chairman also integrates the rotor into its design as well as its movement, with rotor visible through the back of the phone.

Historically Ulysse Nardin was best known for being a manufacturer of marine chronometers, but today the company produces complex mechanical watches which share elements with the Chairman including the emblematic anchor on its screw-down pushpiece as well as the specialized rotor.

that was dam near 7yrs ago though. you think they could have done it by now.

There are solar powered cell phones now but they wouldn't really be helpful for a horror movie.

Maybe a vampire movie. You find a room and unleash a curtain so the sun comes in and you hide in the sun with the battery charging, so you can take a picture of the vampire then show it to him and prove that he doesn't exist, he then self-combusts as the self-realisation of having no self from the selfie destroys his self.

Have you ever heard of battery banks? what you are asking is a battery bank inside the cell phone which would increase the size and weight of the phone by a lot. This is not some genius idea, it is just not feasible.

I'd just bring the stars and stripes to save the motherfkn day and give any hotties around me some extra juice and then some extra juice yaherd?

Good post. Except planned obsolescence has been around since the early 1900s.

I picture TS riding an exercise bike hooked up to his sub panel all day so he can run his microwave for :30 seconds a night.

Nice job trying to save the idiots on horror movies, but of course now they'll just immediately drop their phones with wind up chargers in mud and decide to go back into the murderers house to see if they can find something to clean it off with.

That's obviously a crucial consideration for a case. But, could it work for one of those external USB battery packs?
I'm just thinking of the people sitting on the floor at the airport recharging phones. They'd probably pay for the ability to generate their own power. I'm guessing it might be a very slow process though.

How about a charger that uses the friction between your hand and your dick when you're jerking off? That shit would charge so fast.

And if you watch porn on your phone it will make you want to jerk off, which then charges the phone, which allows you to watch more porn... I think you've just solved the perpetual energy puzzle!
