Anyway, I Dont mean to say this in a way that is disrespecting to anyone but, there is a clear gap in the talent here.
There are legit pros vs a varying degree of amateurs.
So its not very inviting.
Ive seen several people dip out of these comps because they know the same couple of people will win every time and it isnt even competitive.
We had two new winners to 2 of the big 3 contests just last year
@Reach4theSky won NGS V8
Here and
@MT7 won MS PAINT V7
Here
MT7 also just came 2nd in the second round of ISL V11 with his very first gif so to say these contests aren't competitive and the same couple of people are winning them simply isn't true and it takes away from the guys that stepped up, killed it and won
Yes, I've won ISL a bunch of times but I've never won NGS or MS PAINT. The thing is with ISL it's always going to favour the gifs, it's always been that way, even before I started shooping and the old school guys were absolutely killing it, gifs were king. That is why we have other contests that don't allow gifs.
There is no real "warm up" shoop threads anymore ...
We have that "shit talking thread" but I feel like we need one in between for fun And inspiration.
Maybe throw in something not even mma related occasionally.....
There are active shoop threads all over Sherdog right now bud, all you need to do is look. We have Mike's thread still going strong, we have the Usman arm thread which is awesome and people have still been shooping in it this week. The shoop that Domestic Dana thread also and these are just from the beginning of this year. So in the 6 weeks so far of this year, we have had 2 big shoop threads and a comp, which is pretty good going.
We had 33 shoop threads last year (not including contests), some blow up some bomb that's the way it goes.
Also, anyone can start a shoop thread all you need is a good template. We have done shoop threads for boxing events in the past and they just don't do well bud, this is an MMA site after all and that has always been the focus of shoops.
I feel if you split the next comp into pro and contender categories you might get some better attendance on both sides.
We have different contests for this already and to take away from the gif favouritism that has always been the case with shoops. Splitting up the shoop scene into level categories takes away from the whole point of shooping IMO
The idea is king and not so much the execution. I've bombed plenty of times and so did Mike, hell Mike made one of the most technically amazing gifs you will ever see and barely finished in the top 8. A shoop that has a great concept with average execution will always do better than a highly technical shoop with a poor concept. We have seen it so many times.
