Health Insane 1960s High school Gym Class

My parents were in high school in the 60s. Trust me, I've seen the yearbooks, this is not how everyone looked.
Mine too. It's BS. I've seen loads of pictures of teens from that era. Yes they were much leaner than today's teens but not athlete fit like the video showed.

That video is showing the La Sierra System. It was created by some military guy and had fitness test you took to increase your rank. Instead of belts your got different colored shorts to show your promotion.

Hundreds of schools in the US at it's peak endorsed it fully and a couple thousand did a less intense version of it but same concept

It's a real thing, Kennedy helped push it in the early 1960s

My dad was a kid in the late 60s he definitely wasn't as athletic as my brother and I. We also had like 30 lbs of muscle more than he did. This is why I question claims that folks were more fit back then.

People are so fat today that they think this level of fitness is something crazy. Anyone that's starting out relatively "thin" already that works out and eats decently is going to get lean/ripped. Back then most people ate meat, veggies, and fruit, so they probably didn't have to even adjust their diets much or at all.

I think people were fat back then too but they never show it.

You could have filmed my baseball team in 2004 for propaganda reasons and we all would have a six pack and be lifting crazy amounts of weight with a football team.

Most everyone was fitter and in better shape back in those days. Diets were different back then. I suspect that has played a big role in why so many kids today are out of shape and obese.

I saw yesterday that new dietary guidelines came out. The diet ideas are more similar to what was eaten in the 60s I'm thinking. Maybe the new guidelines will eventually see Americans in better shape. I believe the new guidelines will shape school lunches.

Then again too, I just finished a book about cheese and how the author theorizes how Americans eat so much more cheese today compared to past generations and how that is contributing to obesity. I suspect there to be some truth in that.

Also we take a lot more antibiotics than was taken in the past. Antibiotic use has been linked to weight gain.

Children Who Take Antibiotics Gain Weight Faster Than Kids Who Don’t

Get your anti cheese propaganda out of here.

My PE lessons were different.

We focused more on gamesmanship than actual exercise.

We wouldn't run a track or do push ups, but we would play football, hockey, rugby, badminton, tennis, gymnastics instead.

I think that the latter is better. Fitness should be fun.

My Dad was a PE teacher for 45 years and saw crazy changes during his career. At my high school, they used to have 6 PE teachers, teaching a variety of classes. Now I've heard they are down to 2 part-time PE teachers who have to teach other subjects. There are just so many standardized tests and requirements that they make you jump through these days, and PE is now seen as only an elective.

Seems like they just hired a bunch of buff models for propaganda.

I think we have a bigger weight lifting culture than ever due to Narcissism.

Like with a lot of things, there is just a greater concentration in the extremes nowadays.

There's definitely a bigger weightlifting culture now and if we put the biggest/strongest dudes in a random HS today vs the biggest/strongest dudes in random HS in the 60s, today would smash them.

But there's also way more disgusting fatbodies today than in the 60s. If there were, say, 20 laughably out shape teens in an average HS back then, now there are 100, if not more.
