In hindsight would Nate Diaz have had a good shot at taking the title from Woodley?

After the two fights with Conor, Nate was extremely popular and had the chance to get another big fight. There were talks of him getting a welterweight title fight against Woodley but it never came to pass. He ended up sitting out for the next 3 years and wasting much of his prime.

I always thought Nate had a tough style for Woodley. Iron chin, pressure based fighter with high volume. Woodley's low striking output and back against the cage game plan means Nate would not have to chase his opponent and would land significantly more volume. While Woodley could probably take Nate down, he wouldn't be able to do it consistently or he would gas out. Woodley is also not that big of a welterweight and wouldn't have had as much of a size advantage compared to other fighters in that division.

GSP did say Nick would have had a great chance at beating Prime Tyron. Me personally I can see Nick winning but I'd still favor Prime Tyron.

I doubt Nate would be able to beat Prime Tyron.

No.

Nate Diaz at his best couldn't beat Woodey today let alone when he was elite.

He's garbage, always has been. He has never and will never beat an elite WW.

Styles make fights. Look at how they match up. Nate is a good not great fighter with pressure, high volume, and an iron chin. Elite fighters generally beat him by either outwrestling him or outstriking him with better technique. Woodley doesn't have the cardio to outwrestle opponents for 5 rounds and never has. He also isn't a combo fighter and really only has one punch. His strength is waiting to counter. Unless you think he would knock Nate out it seems like a tough matchup.

@TheMessiah lol A YouTuber just took all Woodley’s hardest shots. No way in hell could Tyron finish Nate.

Tyron only has like 2 decent knockouts, he’s far from any KO machine nor does he have much power. He knocked out a past prime Robbie who had his hands down expecting a TD shot and Koscheck who was over the hill.

If Nate had fought Woodley when T-Wood was at his best, it would've been a long shot but not impossible. Ultimately, it all comes down to whether Nate would survive those first big punches. He would've been an underdog, but I could picture Nate surviving and winning a decision or late finish.

Nate Diaz is garbage. There is nothing he could do to even win a round off Woodley when he was champion.

Zero.

He has done nothing in his career to be constantly put in these ridiculous conversations.

Woodley was 39 and Jake has like 25 pounds on Nate. Besides Natw was knocked down several times by Benson Henderson. Nate is so overrated on here, apparently he beats everyone yet he has so many losses

That same youtuber would likely give Diaz permanent brain damage if they had a boxing match.

Woodley fights smart. He would kick Nate's legs and take him down. Nate has too many holes in his game.

Lol no, Tyron would just take him down and lay on him for five rounds. Everyone knows the Diaz brothers are useless against good wrestlers and leg kicks.

Woodley doesn't have the gas tank to wrestle for 5 round.

Holy crap poor prime Woodley getting shafted by revisionist history. Prime Woodley would manhandle Nate and finish him in a round.

Let us remember Nate Diaz's best win against a natural welterweight is Rory Markham... It's also his only one.

Snoozeman didn't even need to throw strikes to get his clinches, hell Diaz would've TKO Woodley in the third.

Zero perspective anymore, one loss to the clown prince of Youtube/Boxing and all of a sudden Washed Tyron never actually was any good - except he was, and his 6-0-1 run as an elite welterweight is as good as anyone has managed in the division outside of Kamaru in recent years.

So much ridiculous recency bias, I can't believe I'm reading a serious question about Nate Diaz being able to potentially beat Woodley.

COME ON.

GSP is wrong. Nick lost to every top fighter he ever faced that wasn't a LW and never once won a fight where his opponent came in looking to take him down

Except that Nate isn't really a fighter in "that division," he's mostly a LW who sometimes fights up.

Weight classes matter. Look what happened to Max when he stepped up in weight class. His volume striking made no impact on the naturally bigger Poirer. Nate doesn't have one shot power, even at LW. The efficacy of damage by attrition goes down, a lot, when you're trying to chip away at guys who are naturally much bigger and are used to eating more power.

Plus Diaz is a guy who refuses to check leg kicks. Woodley has tree trunks for legs. He kicked Carlos Condit's knee ligaments out of the cage. While Nate might try to wear Woodley down, he's a guy who eats a lot of punishment. He'd be completely hobbled and bleeding by round three.

Assuming he fought a Woodley who could still pull the trigger, that is.
