The Wisconsin supreme court has made a ruling that new legislative voting maps are to drawn up.The new maps have to be drawn up before the 2024 election, if the maps are not drawn up the wisconsin supreme court will draw up their own maps.
What are your thoughts on this decision ?

"MADISON, Wisconsin — The liberal-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned Republican-drawn legislative maps on Friday and ordered that new district boundary lines be drawn as Democrats had urged in a redistricting case they hope will weaken GOP majorities.

The ruling comes less than a year before the 2024 election in a battleground state where four of the six past presidential elections have been decided by fewer than 23,000 votes, and Republicans have built large majorities in the Legislature under maps they drew over a decade ago."
The court ruled 4-3 in favor of Democrats who argued that the legislative maps are unconstitutional because districts drawn aren’t contiguous.

“Because the current state legislative districts contain separate, detached territory and therefore violate the constitution’s contiguity requirements, we enjoin the Wisconsin Elections Commission from using the current legislative maps in future elections,” Justice Jill Karofksy wrote for the majority.
Dan Lenz, an attorney for Law Forward, which brought the lawsuit, called the ruling “a victory for a representative democracy in the state of Wisconsin.”

Thank you for the thread, and it sucks that it only has a few responses. I live in WI, and I absolutely support this decision. It’s about time.

For those who don’t know, this should be cut and dry. Here is what our state Constitution says about drawing these maps, in Article 4, Sec 4:

”The members of the assembly shall be chosen biennially, by single districts, on the Tuesday succeeding the first Monday of November in even-numbered years, by the qualified electors of the several districts, such districts to be bounded by county, precinct, town or ward lines, to consist of contiguous territory and be in as compact form as practicable.” (emphahsis mine)

The problem is, our districts are not contiguous (i.e., often times they are not touching one another).

As this AP article, notes, if Rep Jimmy Anderson wants to visit constituents in some of the northern parts of his district, he must:

—exit his 47th Assembly District, pass through the 77th District, reenter the 47th District, then head north through the 48th District to finally reach a cluster of homes assigned like a remote outpost to his district.

It’s become preposterous, and it’s why Republicans have the majorities they do. The citizens are basically a 50-50 Republican/Democrat splits but you’d never know it as you’d have to go back more than a decade to find a time that they had less than 60 seats in the legislature.
