Immediate rematches should be for inconclusive fights

It's up to the challenger to win the belt decisively and the champ to defend, if they fail to do that they need to get back in the queue.

The only exception should be for long serving champs, as an example Shevchenko deserved a rematch but not this second challenge.

i’m okay with rematches as long as it makes sense. close fights? sure, but it should be a very close fight, perhaps with controversy. dominant champ? only for truly dominant champs. that is, they hold a record for defenses. “dominant” doesn’t mean “most hyped.” usman frankly didn’t deserve his rematch. neither did izzy. anderson had a good case tho.

I feel like we see more and more of that fights because parity is all time high, so making "close fight" the bar just means more and more instant rematches.

Strickland lost his first defense attempt, why does that deserve arematch as much as a guy who defended 3, 4, 7,10 times before losing?

The thing with Anderson is interesting, because Machida said that he didnt want a rematch, and the UFC pressured him to take it,because I think they saw big money in the fight, and of course fans felt that the way Silva fought and lost was strange and controversial and would tune in for the a rematch,of course.

I think Silva looked relieved to not have to defend the belt anymore, and UFC really put pressure on him to try again. So sometimes these rematches happen for that reason.

Right. What if the next fight is close and Strickland wins? Do we hold up the div again for another rematch?

At least if the rematch can be made quickly, thats the one saving grace....

Rematches have almost always happened(or not) to suit the UFC's bias towards certain fighters.

Just about the only one which comes to mind which bucked that is Shogun/Machida 2 were I think the negative reaction to the decision was so bad they could not avoid it.

I’m ok with dominant champs getting immediate rematches. I think body of work has to count for something and having 3+ consecutive title defenses should let you jump contenders.
Shouldn't be about defenses imo. Should be current top 5 wins.

Thats what should happen in these situations, fast rematches.

That said its not like MW really has much backlog, Izzy and Khazmat are really the only two fighters getting much title shot hype and one is coming off of a loss and the other still relatively new at MW.

and not gifts for popular long time champs

just rewatched sean vs dricus and the ufc should run It back
I disagree it should be a gift for a popular long time champ

Cannonier

I’d rather never see them fight again. That was a horrible fight. Nobody won that fight.
If they do a rematch, I’ll just skip the card and check results next morning. Then come here for the outrage.

Nah. Close fights should never result in rematches. I'm not in favour of rematches simply because someone was champ for a long time either. I don't even like them for draws, because it means the rest of the division gets held up.

I actually enjoyed the Sean vs DDP fight, should be an auto rematch since there was no clear winner, I think the following things warrant an auto rematch:
1) long time champ with at least 5 defenses (Andy, Nunes, etc)
2) BS decision (Shogun vs Machida 1)
3) a very very close decision (DDP vs Sean)
4) if no other fighter is willing to fight that champ at that specific time the champ wants to (this is how Figgy got the rematch since others were hurt) or as a late replacement

Immediate rematch’s are already reserved for fights they think will sell ppv’s, that’s all that they care about

i didnt know that. no forced rematches seems like a good rule.

although anderson should have known, every fight from then on was basically going to be a title defense, with hungry up and comers trying to make a name off him.

Why do immediate rematches when now "active" fighters take 2 fights a year? That doesn't include the time after or before. So essentially you are find with over a year of 2 fighters fighting just each other. I would be fine with it if guys were doing 3-4x times a year, but it fucking jams divisions.

'Just run it back'

The mantra of people that have no concept of time and no concept of how inactive most top-ranked MMA fighters are. Rematches often take years to settle, can quickly turn into trilogies and drag on forever.

Figueiredo spent three years of his career fighting nobody but Moreno.

Stipe Miocic has spent the last seven years fighting only Ngannou and Cormier. Cain Velasquez spent 5 years fighting only JDS and Bigfoot.

Immediate rematches suck under almost any circumstance.
Stipe and Cain also spent considerable amounts of time out for injuries.

I remember Anderson suggesting he wanted Chris to win by KO in that one. Even a decade later, it's hard to know if Anderson was baiting him for a counter or threw the fight.

first off you guys are wayyyy to bias and play favoritism way too often for me to take yall
seriously
.
2nd ALJO should of gotten an immediate rematch just based off him doing DANA A SOLID
ALSO YOU UNGRATEFUL WEIRDOS SEEM FORGOT IZZY GAVE SEAN AN Opportunity.

had IZZY OR ALJO acted like divas
suga sean & strickland wouldnt of had a chance to become champs in 2023.
If im lying please tell me.

so under those circumstances YES A REMATCH IS Warranted.
A FAVOR FOR A FAVOR.

these are the rules
. If you are on GOAT STATUS like
Izzy Usman jones Nunes Khabib Volk etc etc and you held the belt for a while
then yes you should get a rematch or should be 1 fight from a rematch.

its only when
you keep losing to the same person back to back should you not be granted a title shot.

Booking izzy vs sean 2 or izzy for ddp is not BAD. whats bad would be booking connor vs islam
you're a 'Woke Warrior' of course you are lying.... its all you know how to do...
But for reelz could you lay off the caps and colors and bold and other 'I'm special.... notice ME!!!!!!' crap
I'm trying to get ready for liberal nap time here at the office and you're ruining it for me....
I may have to find a safe space to shield my self from this toxic male aggression...
MODS: I feel threatened and that's not OK.......
