Yep, Imgur have blocked the UK lol

What this would mean even on Sherdog forums is that the most of the custom emojis won't work 🤣

This is in response to UK regulators threatening fines if Imgur doesn't comply with their specific data protection laws and children's codes.

I'd expect to see more companies standing up to countries that want to start issuing arbitrary, specific and legally enforceable rules. It's not feasible for all 193 countries to have their own tailored social media platform from each every company.

Question is, VPN's easily get around this nonsense, so are they next on the UK government hitlist?

N.B.: Starmer is a moron.

What are you guys doing over there man ? Why is this even a thing and happening?

Apparently we're heading on a course that will either see us like China, with an overly state-influenced and limited "internet", or we're heading on a course that's so dumb the next government will immediately reverse direction.

I'm hoping for the latter.

It's the why man

Why is your country doing this shit and being so weird and going after your freedom of speech and expression so hard ?

And why are you guys tolerating it ?

Yep. You're right. Can't see most of the emotes now.

<{hughesimpress}>

This one still works for me, though. Very fitting.

Just so our Amerihomies know what we'd be looking at without a VPN...

Yep, this is what we're gonna have to deal with.

Someone tell @Kowboy On Sherdog to start hosting everything somewhere else to please Keir Starmer...

That is absolutely wild. The slow transition to a silent populace is insane to see.

It’s the former.

I got kicked off of Imgur for bullshit, I think g-string pics because none were naked. I said fuck em and blew it off.

That UK law is nuts and is true censorship. Basically, now you can't see ANYTHING that isn't sterilized for kids without verification of ID, and you can't say anything mean because they will show up and jail you.

I don't like a lot of what is going on in the US, but I'm glad at this point I don't live in the UK.

Thing is, putting kids first is actually valid, there's nothing wrong with that.

But waving around threats to fine businesses who only operate in the UK out of circumstance and popularity isn't the way to go.

I know it's not the way to go because there are a near infinite number of foreign websites out there in HUGE violation of the UK's policies, and they aren't going to pay fines or go away.

We would be better limiting devices accessed by children and young people.

Rather than expect 200 versions of every website to adhere to every individuals countries laws, have TWO types of device. That way if parents insist on buying an unlimited adult device for their kids, that's on their heads.

The problem with doing that with the internet is that it is totally unenforceable without massive censorship and privacy invasion. To do it with porn alone isn't feasible, much less the long list of other things that law doesn't allow easy access to. To block all of the foreign websites, you would have to go to the ISP's, which they tried to do in a state in the US and it didn't work because you have to block a whole bunch of other stuff people want just to block that. The other thing is, it is an invasion of privacy to make you have to register with an ID to get into all of those websites to see the content.

I could see to some extent that it could be harmful to have kids be able to see porn so young even if I question the feasibility and moral questions (because of censorship) of banning porn without ID. But a lot of that law just isn't necessary. For example, there is no proof that a kid reading about suicide will commit suicide. That subject will come up in movies, TV shows, the news, etc. no matter what. Trying to sterilize the internet of suicide talk is overkill and is totally nuts.

But yeah, the real solution is for parent to actually parent. When that happens, kids will mostly be OK no matter what they see on the internet.

My take is simple and has been for a while. We envy China. We are a country in decline in many ways and our "leaders" see China as a booming power We need to copy. Its the beginning of a social credit system like Commy China. Total domination of the population into submission.

To addi also think this is partially the reason for mass immigration. People from the third world are used to this type of overreach and domineering government behaviour. Give them houses and benefits they're far more likely to not protest this stuff. Plus most of them are very religious so the government blocking lots of the Internet might be appealing to them.

I wondered why that was happening. I'd post the "well that escalated quickly" gif if I could.
