I'm at Namsaknoi gym

Hi mate, yes my training is up unfortunately, I miss it greatly.

I had such a good time training with Namsaknoi, I've found that my skills, technique and outlook on muay thai have improved greatly.

While it may now have the big name Thais, the classes rarely go above 15 as the gym is new and out in the sticks, you get very close attention by the instructors. With Namsaknoi being who he is, and having connections with the evolve gym, during my time, there was 2 instructors over from evolve. You can only be an instructor there is you have as a minimum, 2 Lumpini titles, or so I've been told, so they are very high level and their patience with us and English is very good.

With the instructors having good English, they can tell you about their techniques in better detail and it really did help me understand the game better. Also, if you hang around after training at the gym, namsaknoi may either sing for you, or give you some real war stories, worth hanging back for either way!

The island is really nice, and there is a lot to do during your time off. It's not a major party place (outside of the full moon party) so take that into account. I went to samui (the closest island) to fight and watch some fights and I kept comparing it negatively to koh phangan.

Any further questions about anything places to stay, things to do etc, just give me a shout!
Thanks a ton for the reply. I'm probably going there late July for about three weeks.
Main things I'm worried about are:
1) The person in charge of the FB page told me it's high season, so it might be full/I might not get enough attention.
2) Gym might be touristy. This is a big deal. I'm going to Koh Phangan with the intention to train seriously. I'm worried that sparring partners might be a bit inexperienced and the teaching might be oriented towards beginners/tourists/partygoers. I'm hoping you can shed some light on this.

Please throw in any advice you think I'd need when going there. How will I get from the airport to the port? How easy is it getting around Koh Phangan? How much money should I bring for a month's stay?
I recall you're from the UK? In that case you qualify for a Visa Exemption (so do I). What's the process like?

Sorry to flood you with questions. There just isn't enough info on NSN and I feel unsure about going there, as opposed to a gym like Sitmonchai because of the massive amount of reviews and info.

Thanks again for the info!

Koh Phangan isnt really known for its Muay thai camps. There are 2 camps on the island that have the majority of the tourists from what I can gather, Kobra and Diamond. I would say that Diamond is the better of the 2, but whenever we had people from either Diamond or Kobra visit NSN, they were shocked by how clean it is and how much attention the instructors paid to them.

The easiest way to get to Koh Phangan is to fly to Samui airport, and from there get a ferry (can be arranged at the airport at the Seatran desk) from Bangrak pier to Thong Sala pier. It will cost around 400 baht for the journey.

Once you are in Thong Sala, if you arrange with the gym they may be able to collect you, if not, then the taxi stands are just a short walk away, ask then to take you to Namsaknoi Gym, Say it is opposite Maduwan School and they will know where it is, the journey should cost you around 200 baht but if you look like a mug they'll try and charge you 3-400 baht.

Getting round Koh Phangan is easiest if you rent a scooter, if you rent one for a month you can get some deals through the gym, 4000-5000 Baht for the month, or else the rate everywhere is 250 Baht a day. Please be careful who you get it from though, the scooter scam is famous, and be careful when riding one. I cant see any other way of getting round (maybe bicycle) , i would highly recommend getting a scooter. I never rode one before I went there and Namsaknoi had to teach me.

If you stay at the gym, i forget exactly how much it is, maybe 250 baht a night? It includes food which is very tasty. I didnt stay at the gym, so i'm not 100% sure about the prices, but the accommodation is what you would expect. Its clean, but basic, you get a fan in the room and you share with one other in bunks. The next time i go, i will probably stay at the gym. Namsaknoi lives on site too, so if you stay at the gym and just hang out, you're bound to have some good times with him.

I stayed 5 mins away from the gym in a bungalow, 1 bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. It was really clean, with a fan and AC, i loved it there. I paid 10,000 baht a month but that wasnt in high season, plus electricity which came to 2500 baht for 2 months , i used however much i needed.

For a month, it would depend mainly on whether you stay at the gym, and how often you will train. I overspent by a bit because i got in as many private lessons with Namsaknoi as i could, i highly recommend them!

Great info, will save it for later :D
I'll probably bump the thread when I get there.
Are the sessions like most other gyms (I.e: skipping, then pads, then bags, then sparring/clinching)? Or do they follow a different structure?

If you need any help with sorting accommodation out let me know, I have some friends there that could help out.

Sparring is weds and Fri, the usual class structure is pretty standard I think, there is a heavy emphasis on clinch technique, namsaknoi shows some crazy tech in almost every class.

I'll be staying at the gym. I considered the bungalow (AC is a huge plus) but I feel it might be a bit too far from the gym, and idk about riding a scooter (heard some crazy stories about locals driving ahahhaha). I've yet to decide but I'll probably go to the on-site rooms.
Still, if something comes up or they're fully booked, I'll let you know. Thanks for offering!

Great thread. Thanks for sharing your experience TS.

Just so you guys know, Namsaknoi has a youtube channel with lots of content from his new gym. looks good

.

I'll be there at the 25th and update the thread with my experiences. Wish me luck :D

@RichardN7

Theres a little pharmacy at the side of Bangkok Bank (on the main road in Thong Sala) called Phantip Pharmacy, its run by a nice old lady and is open part time (5pm-9pm i think).

It is by far the cheapest place on the island to get Namman Muay thai oil, electrolytes and other medicines. My friend got a skin infection, and went to one of the main pharmacies, they charged him 2600 Baht for his treatment. She'll give you the exact same stuff for a quarter of the price.

Good to know. I'll bring most types of medicine (anti-fungals, antibiotics, etc.) with me, but still useful info.
Btw, I failed my driver's license exam last week xD no scooters for me ;(
Any idea where I can rent a regular bicycle?

You don't *technically * need a licence. I never rode a scooter before I got there and I was OK. The police just stop and fine you if you don't wear a helmet, not for not having a licence.

You can rent bicycles from any scooter rental place. The ride into town is approx 10mins on a bicycle, so it isn't far.

Good to know. I'll decide whether I'll go for a scooter or bike once I'm there.
Aside from this, any other last minute tips?

Im not so sure about laundry at the gym, I would always see clothes put out to dry, there is a laundry place down the road from the gym, I think the guys used that. I used the laundrette at the bungalows myself.
