I used to think "hey, they have a point".. But then I thought about, say, other things like 2x4 pieces of lumber. They're actually not 2x4 inches - they're a quarter or eight (can't recall) inch smaller on some dimensions. It's kind of the norm for certain types of advertised measurements, and a "foot long" sub might fit under that kind of blanket defense.
