How far is he away from becoming the best middleweight of all time?

Some of the names already on Whittaker's list: Romero, Jacare, Brunson and Tavares. All known names in the top 5/10. Jacare and Romero are easily in 1st/3rd positions right now and Gastelum second behind Romero right now.

Gastelum just got his first good win vs Jacare on Saturday. But Whittaker is ahead of him and Whittaker is less than a year older than Gastelum. If he beats Gastelum (and finishes him), who does he have to fight next to become the goat middleweight?

Elias Theodorou? Brad Tavares 2 - their first fight was very close? the great Sam Alvey? Trevor Smith?

Excluding Gastelum, there aren't many other high level MWs out there. Maybe Branch, but he gets ktfo. Maybe Costa in a year or two, but even Costa doesn't have a good win yet.

Edit: Anderson is not the goat. He got boxed up by Bisping, Weidman beat him easily two times. You are not the goat fighting guys like Griffin, Bonnar, Leites, Maia (of 2010), James Irvin, Patrick Cote, Travis Lutter and Chris Leben.... the best fighter he ever fought knocked his ass out and made Silva break his leg because of his carelessness.

Trick question, unless he can get a fight with Phil Baroni.

Pretty hard to be best middleweight of all time if your name isn't Anderson Silva. InB4 dickpill jokes

I want to see him fight Rockhold still. I think that's a tough match up for him.

The former big four (Weidman/Rockhold/Jacare/Romero) are on the decline, and it doesn’t look like the division is blessed with outstanding younger talents right now.

Except Whitaker of course.

When I saw the title, I was thinking, "No way, it can't be one of those threads already. The guy just won the interim title and hasn't even had a defense yet." How naive I was back then.

Even if he gets 10 consecutive title defenses, he still needs to go up 3 times and matrix the fuck out of 3 lhw in the middle of his reign.

Well, who else has beaten Brunson, Jacare and Romero back-to-back? He is the closest active MW to becoming one of the MW greats.

I think he outboxes Luke. I used to be a big fan, but damn Luke has been figured out, eh?

Are we counting Anderson's steroids run? Because it takes alot for that, ignoring him weidman had 3 defenses, so he's going to need another two names after Kelvin to be #the best MW.

Pretty much. If he can´t take the fight down, he´s getting KOed. It happened in the Bisping fight, almost happened in the Branch fight and happened again in the Romero fight.

Agreed, but Whittaker had a good fight with Romero - who didn't look anything like he was declining. He also blew out Jacare without much trouble - more impressive than Kelvin's win. I would like to see him knock out Weidman, but it would have been better a few years ago though.

If you have to list Brunson and Tavares... I’d say he’s not that close.

Yeah Romero may be an exception, but he‘ll retire at some point, too.

Prime Weidman would be an awesome fight.

Idk man. Whittaker doesn't have the retard power that Romero has, and if Luke gets Whittaker down (Which is possible if not likely), his top control is second to none.

Anderson is one of the best ever, gonna be a while before Robert is best mw ever.

This.

The spider ruled his division at will. Some of his moves look like there was a glitch in the matrix.
Which of Andersons opponents were as good as Romero and Jacare though? Maybe Vitor or Hendo.

His resume actually isn't as good as Yoel's in spite of beating Yoel

However, unlike Yoel he probably has several years left at the top of the division and by the time he retires I think he'll have a better one
