Sambo isn’t overly represented in high level submission grappling apart for the UWW grappling tournaments I think the Russians there are Sambists.


But yeah in pure grappling BJJ is superior but in MMA it seems otherwise right now.

Otherwise how? Gary Tonon just destroyed the knee of some sambo champ in an MMA fight. Ububakar nurmagomedov got tapped by a no name French blue belt in the UFC

Modern day competition BJJ is one of the most terrible bases for MMA. No explosion, guard flopping, subpar takedown arsenal, etc.

It’s cute if you want to be a nerd and roll with soccer moms and out of shape Magic the Gathering players, but Sambo is a much better base for MMA.

I agree with your first statement. But as someone who’s trained, I def was not rolling with soccer moms and magic players. Funny joke though.

Why do bjj guys not fight Sambo guys under Sambo rules ?

You do know that the AIGA rules are like taylor made for the non pure BJJ athletes? And there were quite a few bs resets from the judges and the Modolfo (bjj) team still won?

AIGA has the same core rules as ADCC with a couple of points awarded for a takedown. No strikes allowed, takedowns and control deemphasized, and butt scooting and guard pulling are still in play.

Same as ADCC and every other no-gi BJJ competition.

I don’t know if you can really call it grappling anymore if strikes are allowed?
Like many others have mentioned here, sport sambo does not have strikes either and the Team Nurmagomedov guys were happy to butt scoot and pull guard instead of scoring two points with a takedown.

Now that makes more sense. I thought there was only 1 Sambo and it was the mma style one that Fedor did. Then it makes full sense
