If Justin Gaethje came to the UFC and beat Michael Johnson, Edson Barbosa, and Al laquinta would you be ok with the UFC just giving him the LW belt???

Khabib never had to fight and beat the LW Champion to become the Champion. The same can be said for Tony, but... Khabib didn't even have to fight a top 10 LW to win the belt. He didn't even have to fight the # 1 ranked LW in the UFC, or the # 2 ranked LW, or even the # 3 ranked LW, on his way to getting a Title shot. Khabib was given the LW belt, not the interim belt, for beating the 11th ranked LW in the UFC!!

If Francis Ngannou, had been unable to fight Stipe, but instead fought and beat Aleksei Oleinik, you would be fine with the UFC just giving him the UFC HW belt after that win???

Champion wasn't fighting. He was the best in the division 2 years ago, but hasn't proved that since.

If Barboza beats Lee and Gaethje wins this weekend and then those two fight in which Gaethje wins, Gaethje would probably need one or two more wins to solidify a title shot argument.

I would if the Al laquinta fight was for the vacant title.
How hard a concept is this ffs.

If there's no champion then the winner of the title fight is the champion. Again not a difficult concept.

Was Bas Rutten ever the UFC heavyweight champion?

Conor ducked Khabib which is why he got stripped out of the belt and even had to resort to attempted terrorism with his cronies on a bus at major sports arena in NYC out of all places just to avoid defending the belt.

Khabib is the real champ while Conor will be dealing with terrorism charges and civil lawsuits possibly even jail time.

This would not have been an issue if Conor actually just defended the LW title at the time.

There is no doubt that Khabib is the best currently healthy and active LW in the world. He has two very clear opponents, but it's up to them to make it to the cage.

Same people who say McGregor's had a paper belt because he was gifted a title shot are now saying Khabib's is legit when he beat the #11 ranked fighter to get it.

At least Conor KOed the champ. Khabib dry humped a fringe top 15 fighter to a decision, couldn't even finish him.

Not in the slightest bit legit, regardless of the situation.

Also I'm a fan of McGregor but Tony is the most deserving contender, he deserves the shot.

UFC is a joke, a business, and entertainment. Why are you getting so emotional?

Tony has beaten everyone that Khabib has and more (with the exception of MJ who looked like the next LW champion when Ferg lost and has looked like shit when Khabib beat him)

Not only has Tony beaten them but he has finished them.

Neither is champion imo.

Tony is the only one with a decent LW resume right now. Khabib has 2 top 10 wins and Conor has 1 at LW.

Tony has 4

Stripping Tony's belt for this was pretty lame. Khabib just happened to be the one that wasn't injured this time, when he's pulled out for even less professional reasons in the past. Even if Tony goes on to lose to Khabib, he is the lightweight champion until then in my eyes.

Who else is there to fight? Only Tony

But I agree he needs to fight Tony to be the "real" champion.

It’s fine if you don’t recognize him as the champ yet, it’s not like the belts mean shit these days. They’re just a means to a higher payday. You can choose to only see him as the real champ after his first defense.

At least we’re on the way back to some legitimacy surrounding the title, now if Khabib will just stay healthy...

"Love him or hate him, Conor has been great for the UFC and MMA. The fighters all make more money since he started fighting in the UFC. And the fact that you are comparing him to a guy who has historically only fought once a year, against lesser competition is laughable. The guy didn't even have to beat a top 10 ranked opponent to become Champ. Khabib was unable to fight the most deserving guy for the title of Champion, because he was wearing sun glasses inside a television studio and tripped over a wire/cable. "

But khabib is the #1 contender? Are you purposing he fights himself in some ufc3 mirror match real life doesn't work like that. Barboza is #3 he did beat him.

You must be a huge #2 eddie alverez fan to think he's got something different than Al or Edson, when he had to cheat his way out of a loss to save his ranking.

I doubt Justin would win all three of those fights.

Khabib is a bigger story than just three fights. He's undefeated, 26-0, 10-0 in the UFC, and 9 of those 10 wins were dominant performances. No one else has done that.

This isn't a pro Conor thread and I know Khabib is an incredible fighter.

My point is to think about what just happened. Khabib only had to beat the 4th and 6th ranked LW's in the last 2 years, to get a Title shot. Is he the only LW who has 2 top 5 wins in the last 2 years??? And the UFC just gave him the undisputed belt after he beat a guy who wasn't even in the top 10.
