Fill in the blanks, please. I need some inspiration sorting out my game.

Someone on here once used that exact phrase and I thought it would help me to copy his approach... but now I don't remember what guards he said.

MMA/self defense? If he's standing, I use stand-my-ass-up guard.

or heel hook. Game over.

Standing: DLR, shin to shin, x
On knees: butterfly, half, closed

If he's standing, I use "Sit up Guard" (just sitting up ready to hand fight, defend my neck and attack legs at the same time. ) If he's kneeling I use single-x guard and sweep my opponent backwards or transition to (full)x-guard or 7 guard, then trip backwards at the low calf into what's essentially a stack pass to side control.

I don't think that's what your phrase was, but I hope it helps.

What is 7 guard?

if he's standing, i stand up also. if i can't stand, then i play x guard
if he's on his knees, i close guard. if i can't keep closed guard, then i play feet on hips open guard.

standing: spider
knees: closed if I can get it, if not butterfly

What is 7 guard?
x-guard is essentially a de la riva and a butterfly hook crossing, 7 guard is having two butterfly hooks on the same leg from underneath your opponent with your arm under hooking the other leg. the "7" name comes from the shape of your body when in position.

standing: sumi-gaeshi
knees: closed <-> butterfly
