This has probably been overlooked but if Cormier does the impossible and defeats Jon Jones, would he be regarded as an all-time great in the sport? You often hear Jones get touted as a GOAT candidate but surely if Cormier can avenge his only defeat, he must closely follow.

Thoughts?

For sure. Look at what he has done in his career, both as a HW and a LHW.

Jones is his only loss. He beats Jones, and he is definitely worthy of GOAT talk.

DC would have to beat JJ twice..then, yea maybe..

if he beats Bones he is #2 lhw all time. As of now i have wandy ahead of time just due to quantity and sheer amount of finishes. If he beats Bones twice and some other contenders and holds the belt for a few years into the twilight of his career, hes probably the lhw goat sand quite possilby mma goat. Its carzy to think that he coulkd have been the HW goat! dude is so talented but what we are saying is next to impossible, bones sonned him hard in their first fight. IT was like dc never wrestled before, that was so impressive.

DC is probably the best fighter in MMA history to not be regarded as #1 in their division.

Only if he beats coked jones! A win over coke-free Jones would have to have an * after it.

YES, unless he wins via jones DQ from 12 to 6 elbows

Anybody that beats up Jon Jones is great.
That is why Matt Hamill is the GOAT as of now

he either should finish Jones or beat him twice with decision

Yes, definately. Would be one of the greatest victories in MMA history.

I think DC is the 2nd best LHW ever. He would be a dominant LHW champ in any other era in MMA, over Chuck, Rampage, Shogun, Wand etc. He just has the shit luck that he's fighting in the same era as the #1 best LHW ever.

Seriously lol, I always had a feeling Jones took a snort or 2 before fight to go in all Tony Montana. Can't feel shit. But that's just my tin hat theory for his chin.

It would certainly be an achievement, but GOAT status is achieve through career dominance.
He would for sure move up the GOAT list, but not into the upper echelon based on one win over a GOAT.

People would say the same sort of things they say when a champion/popular fighter lose: he was never that good, he was fighting smaller fighters, he should retire, etc

I already consider him that. Imo he is a top 3 Hw, and is the clear 2nd best lhw in the world with a chance to be #1

Yes. What he accomplished at his age and in the amount of time he did it would definitely put him in goat talks. Deserving so. Came into the major mma scene as a replacement and KO'ed trt Big Foot (so had just gotten through dribbling Fedor's head on the canvas) and made Barnet look like a rookie.

Matt Hamil's win over Jones is just karma cause he got screwed by Bisping.

Maybe I'm just a hater when it comes to these "all time" discussions, but the dude is 6-1 in the UFC. No.

Yeah he would. Both him and jones would be p4p greats

I think its also karma the other way, no Hamil didn't show he was better than Jones BUT Jones lost due to cheating and he's gotten away with tons of cheating since then so I think having one DQ loss on his record is a accurate reflection of his career thus far.

As far as Cormier I'd say if he beats Jones he's probably pushing into the top 20 all time or there abouts.

yes, I believe he would. Jones is the main reason he's not undefeated anymore..
