Yeah, people really fail to recognize just how oppressive Saudi Arabia is. I had a friend in college who was born in Iran but whose family moved to Saudi Arabia for his father's job. When he came to the United States for a year, his biggest goal was to get a steady girlfriend with whom he could openly spend time without worry, because if he was seen fraternizing with a woman who wasn't his family/wife in Saudi Arabia, he'd be publicly lashed.

It was really heartbreaking. Smart guy with a good heart - but from a country with a shitty government.

There was a case of a transgendered woman that attracted attention from the clergy, who then lobbied the Ayatollah to amend the Republic's charter to classify transgenderism as a psychosexual health issue of a person's brain and body not being in harmony - something that the government and society should be tasked with remedying. I've never looked into how that's reconciled with divine creation, etc.

What's more interesting to me is that homosexuality is still illegal, although rarely charged, so the theocracy still abides by traditional gender norms attached to sex. So being a man attracted to men is sinful, but being a woman attracted to men, but in a man's earthly vessel, is not.
