I rewatched "Prime Hughes" today...

Again the noobs that dont appreciate the evolution of mma that Hughes had a massive part in.

I think this is another case of someone thinking "prime" means "GOAT/unbeaten/unbeatable". "Prime Hughes" was a thing but prime is all relative to themselves. Jeremy Stephens has a personal best streak of 3 wins and has the most losses in the UFC but there is still such a thing as Prime Stephens.

I agree, you should switch stance before the fight and stick to that one. Switching stances in mid fight should be illegal, it's like changing your discipline from boxing to jiu jitsu during the fight. Just stick with your original stance

Who is saying he would beat Usman?

he was dominant in his era and then the game caught up to him and passed him by. I haven’t seen people saying otherwise.

He started his career 41-4. There is no denying he was tremendously successful for his time. But I think it is pretty obvious that he wasn’t a fully evolved mixed martial artist, his striking was even a long standing joke on here “K1 Hughes.” He thrived in an era of specialists and part timers, once guys could do everything, specifically stuff takedowns, he fell off.

well, he was already pretty old/shopworn by the time the game passed him by.

GSP was the peak of the evolution from Hughes' era, but its not like Hughes lost to GSP for his title then never won a fight. He won a few, had that sub over Almeida then lost to BJ. Maybe the "fall off" was the Kos fight? Which was his last fight...which was like 10 years after he became champion back when guys were fighting 6 times a year.

I havent read anyone saying he would beat Usman...

But yeah he would still wreck alot of guys in the top 10 that arent good at grappling.

Why are you messing with the guy that can hardly walk and talk because he got hit by a train... just shut up lol

Matts a dick and dont feel sorry for him one bit.
He beat up his wife.
Even his brother has a restraining order against Matt because he tried to strangle Marks kid.
POS got off easy with the train.

Usman wouldnt out grapple Hughes. He might beat him standing but he wouldn’t out grapple him.

especially not a prime Hughes with a gas tank that never ends.

Usman would outgrapple and outstrike Hughes with one arm tied behind his back, you nostalgic fool.

@jeff7b9 @King in the North @TeenageMutantLesnarTurtle @CrimsonFan @BigTruck

You wanted an example of a Hughes > Usman dude? Didn't have to wait long <Lmaoo>

No he wouldn’t. Usman isn’t out grappling Hughes. Hughes is a better wrestler too

Usman is a far superior wrestler, MMA grappler, and clinch fighter. If you disagree, you don't know fighting.

Usman's cardio was also far better
Usman would win based on being a more complete fighter. He would likely not have an advantage in wrestling or grappling. Anyone who has objectively watched them both fight knows this.

Hughes wouldn't be champ today. He was probably a dick for a lot of his life. That doesn't mean he wasn't an incredible fighter for his time, and one of the most impressive champs the UFC has ever seen.

Lol at downplaying huges. At that time most wrestlers were complementing their wrestling with boxing/kickboxing. Huges went heavy on training jiujitsu. He finished losts of fights via gnp, slams and finished several fights via submision including a young St. Pierre. Prime Huges would be in the top 10 today without a doubt.

One dimensional prime Hughes gets destroyed by today’s top 10 WWs. The game has evolved
that same one made gsp tapout...he was super strong and could take out most of the division

These comparisions are always stupid, Hughes fighting in the late 90's, Usman started his career nearly 15 years later. Usman had more access to techniques, better training faciltiies, coaches, staff, dietry information and supplements, training methods etc. What matters is accomplishments and notable victories, something Hughes is marginally ahead of in comparision.

Don’t get me wrong, “fell off” is not meant as an insult.

He dominated WW from about 2000-2006, defended 6-7x as I recall. One of the few fighters to regain the undisputed title and defend it again.

and he has wins over GSP, BJ and Serra which I consider to be the second generation of WWs he competed against.

There is no shame in losing a few fights in the tail end of a career after winning 41 of his first 45 fights.

100% agree. He can almost be considered a part timer, he barely trained for many of his title fights.

He started in the era where they would pull drunk dudes out if crowds to fight because thats how new the sport was.
I remember one person on here saying hed give Usman a hard time and it basically boiled down to wrestler vs wrestler and since Matt was champ for a long time obviously hed be the best to do it leaving out the tiny bit of info i laid out in my intro.
Usmans defensive wrestling amd stand up is far superior to Hughes and I loved Hugh's reign. I feel like Hughs vs Usman would be a lot like Hughs vs Gracie albeit a tiny bit not as lopsided because Matt was more well rounded than Gracie.

Another Johnny come lately that wants to dump on the pioneers and legends of the sport. Of course he would not be competitive against modern WWs, but that doesn't diminish what he accomplished during HIS era. He was a dominant champion, legend, and a pioneer, period. If not for guys like Hughes, Tito, Chuck, and others, the UFC would not be where it is today.
