The Spanish explorers who invaded the Andes region in 1532 discovered the crop and brought it back to SpainYa I only just learned recently that Potato's were imported to Europe from America in the 1690's-1770's and became the staple in places like Ireland, Poland, France, Russia etc so much so that I always assumed that potato's were native to Europe, when they weren't.
Turns out grains used for bread and turnips, cabbages etc were the staple before that. Even Vodka was made without potato's for a long time.
