that was honestly genius mindgames by Ilia, if Max takes the challenge he's at a disadvantage since he has less power, if he doesn't take the challenge then he is basically showing that Ilia's power is a real concern for him and that he doesn't want to swing with him. That's the thing about being a tough guy, you'll make yourself a target to someone who got your number. Anyone who saw Max point out Gaethje knew he only did that because Justin was severely compromised and ilia used that wonderfully to get the crowd on his side to kinda exposed Max.
