I've stashed my backpacking pack a few times to summit a peak. I'll usually go off trail a bit and bury it under some leaves/pine needles or something. On 2 occasions I've come back to stuff stolen from my pack. Once it was just food stolen, the other time they took some gear. Both times were obviously humans, not animals. What's odd is that whoever did it had to have been watching me for a long time, and following me. I carry a firearm now.

Happens more often than you think. Some stalks in the woods daily. They don’t act on it but they get “off” by being on the prowl. I would advise to keep pepper spray, knife or a gun depending on local laws.

I would have left it. It's either someone who lost something or put it there and might come back to get it. Or it's some shady shit going on that I don't want to be involved in. Even if it was all cash, would you feel comfortable spending it? I'd always be worried someone would come looking for it. Of course that's only in teh movies. I'm sure if it was drug money the last thing the drug dealers want is to bring attention to themselves.
