Our (Canadian) federal budget came down yesterday, an one of the main changes is now some of us will be paying more for others peoples' kids.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/child-tax-benefits-budget-1.3502988

I generally lean left of centre, and I am fine with single payer health care, income supplements for poor seniors, but for some reason it really bugs me that we have to help with paying for the 'middleclass' kids!

WTF am I missing here? Am I a neocon?

"The program will pay up to $6,400 per child under six and up to $5,400 per child for those aged six through 17. However, the benefits begin to phase out starting at $30,000 in net family income."

I don't think you are paying for middle class kids. Is $30K - $40K considered middle class in Canada?

Also, I would always pay a little bit more if that means someone else can have a little more. I think that is just a philosophical difference that I have with many people

You're not really paying for them. They are just getting a tax break that you don't.

No. 30K to 40K as a combined family income is pretty much poor here.

Ya same here. I could understand if people making 70 or 80K were getting extra tax breaks but geez...30K is pretty much poverty in many places. That gets you an apartment and a shit car.

Yep, poor people are getting a tax break.

I under 30K is less annoying, but famalies making 40k right up to 150K still qualify, albeit for less.

To make our lives here in Toronto work, several years ago my Wife and I moved here with a combined income of what would have been 35,000 for the year (had job prospects not worked out for us) and no money saved (because school).

I can imagine how rough life must be in that situation raising a kid.

I'm at the high end of that and normal day care costs for a year with my 2 kids was over 22K before they started school. This was just a normal daycare. YMCA before and after now currently sets me back 12K a year.

People with kids have expenses you don't just to survive. Daycare isn't a luxury. It's so we can go to work, and pay taxes, and it's cheaper than being on welfare.

I hear ya. Many people don't stop and think about how hard it actually is. Some people work hard and just can't land that high paying job. People seem to think work hard and everyone makes hundreds of thousands and gets rich. It doesn't work like that.

I know, I was just beign dramatic.

But, for some reason such programs aimed at helping partents with their kids really pisses me off. Really strange this one bugs me!

They need the population to grow for the economy. And it's cheaper than bringing in immigrants.

then wear a condom!!!!

Kids are expensive as hell. Canada needs to up it's birthrate to pay for future pensions and the like. As it is Canada is bringing in tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of immigrants a year for economic reasons.

You choose not to have kids is fine, but you're also going to benefit from these kids once they're in the workforce.

then save the money. skip a family vacation. we had to hire a nanny for 2,200 a month b/c there were no daycare spots in my neighbourhood. We burned through our savings.

so bite down on the pillow!!! lol sorry

What's going on that in modern times whole societies of people need govt welfare to pay for your kids? I know what it is. We've told women to work outside the home, told people to take on debts for cars, houses, boats, tv's , vacations etc. And just take on debt that we can't handle.
