I cannot see any active UFC fighter rivaling the run Jon Jones, GSP, or even Anderson Silva had.

Stalled?

He hasnt even lost yet lmao

calm down bruva

Chimaev fought as much in the last 3 years as he did in his first 3 months in the organization, which include a controversial dec and a couple of short notice replacements, one of them unranked

Maybe not derailed but stalled big time

I don't think anyone goes in expecting to see those kinds of fighters. We don't know they exist, until they do.

Shavkat though... I've seen people cite that he isn't so impressive, but I've not seen anything but excellence out of that dude. He's willing to take some damage to dish it out, and he finds a way to finish, every time. He's very prime Fedoresque in that way, he will look human, until he looks superhuman. I believe he has as good a chance to become a legend as anyone who's ever done it.
In my mind Shavkhat is the love child of Fedor and Sakuraba.

The man is ferocious yet calm, cool, and collected. No fear in his eyes.

tom aspinal runs his mouth all the time
i bet he could wipe out 3 generations of fighters

he wants legacy he should build one
hes a nobody right now against the likes of jones gsp or silva
but i hope he proves me wrong
lmao

Not if they all keep wanting to jump around weight classes. That stuff is getting boring now. I want to see guys ACTUALLY cement their legacy over many years and many fights. What they are doing now is trying to become GOATs with 2 fights. There's a reason we're suddenly getting multiple division champs but nobody is going on 9 title defenses streaks.

Dude Machida and Vitor got brutally wrecked. Lyoto landed one good punch and got heaped. In 2 rounds. Dropped with a punch then brutally choked. Vitor got dominated too. You expect someone to fight the best for a decade and never be in trouble.
No, I don't expect that, which is why I responded to the poster who claimed he's never been in trouble by pointing out plenty of times where he has.

People will endlessly include the Vitor armbar as a mark against Jones even though he got out of it and ended up tapping Vitor with that arm, meanwhile say Khabib being guillotined by Poirier is a positive for him because he got out of it.

Spending enough time on Sherdog is just realizing that everybody's running with whatever subjective narrative works for their favourite fighters.

He already got stomped vs Islam. That counts

Israel had a lot of defenses. But nobody touches the eras of dominance GSP Jones and Anderson had. Khabib retired early.
I might be the Dawn of the Age of the Top-Dog...

That was the golden age of MMA when GSP, Anderson, and Jones were all champions and on exceptional runs. Doubt we'll ever see anything like that again. For one guys just don't fight much anymore, once twice a year tops.

So much debate about Jones. I have to say, he came in being much bigger than his competition and cutting down from 225 or so to make it to LHW. It worked out for him for a while but whenever he went against similar-sized fighters like Gus 1, Reyes, and Santos, he was rocked and had a lot of decisions that could have gone either way. The Reyes fight IMO was a massive robbery.

For Jones, I think it was all about timing more than anything. The guy came into the division when it was in shambles and with LHWs that were the size of MWs.

I still consider him the GOAT but he just came in at the right time.

Silva had a lot of weak competition
GSP's opponents were only good in 1-2 areas, while he was nearly complete
JJ fought a lot of worn guys, MW's and guys way smaller than him

Yeah I agree, those times are over
All 3 ATGs though

That period might have been the greatest era for MMA as a whole. It's a shame a lot of fans won't get to experience any of that. With that being said, Volk has had an exceptional run. His name deserves to be in that echelon of great fighters

Silva and GSP fought similar caliber of competition, which was among the best there was in their era.

Leon's probably got the best chance. He's 32, so realistically he could hold the belt for 4/5 years; to be clear, I'm not saying he will. Competition aside, he has the potential to do so before age becomes a factor.

In that time, if he were to rack up another 8/9 defences, that would put him on a 20 fight unbeaten streak with 10/11 title defences. That would put him in the top 5 all time conversation for me.

That's a heck of a lot of what if's for a guy who nearly got finished by Nate Diaz.

Leon's an elite fighter but I don't see him holding the belt long.

100% the best era of MMA, guys actually were willing to defend their belts and those dominant champs were fun to watch, idt Volk belongs in that convo yet, but he is top ten all time already, I don't have Volk above Aldo yet

Agree and in their days, they fought all the who's who's and they did not complain and rank squat as much as fighters now. Buncha prima Donna's now like NBA stars

Jon Jones became champion at the age of 24 and had a crazy run at LHW.

GSP became champion at the age of 25, lost the belt once to Serra, but then won it back and never looked back.

Anderson Silva is an outlier as he became a champ at 31 and had a crazy run.

However, the two GOATs in GSP and JBJ won their belts before their quarter-life crisis. I cannot see any active UFC star that is up and coming rivaling that.
Jon jones no hes undefeated since he was like 20 years old...

Anderson silva no the skill and finishes let alone that long title streak and amazing fighting.

Gsp? Yeah I think that one is doable

Put Aldo on that list as well. Everyone clamors to anoint Holloway or Volk the FW Goat. Though phenomenal champions, no one is touching what Aldo accomplished at FW. As guys like Volk and Max fall, it’s further cements and magnifies Aldo’s run as champion.
