Synopsis: The US Army’s hypersonic missile test is a go for this August. The goal is to build a weapon that can destroy targets anywhere on earth within an hour of obtaining targeting data and permission to launch. This comes after China’s January hypersonic test, which made them the second country after the United States to conduct experimental flights with hypersonic vehicles. Expect hypersonic programs and precision guidance to receive a renewed focus given the need to develop NIA/D3 constructs necessary for 21st century combat.

CAPITOL HILL: Prompt Global Strike is a program to build a weapon that can destroy targets anywhere on earth within an hour of getting targeting data and permission to launch. Sandia Lab and the Army may have found the answer: the Advanced Hypersonic Weapon.

The other programs are the Air Force’s Conventional Strike Missile (CSM) and the DARPA/Air Force HTV-2 program (pictured above). The Air Force and DARPA, who pursued other technologies, weren’t nearly as successful as the Army’s system.

Was a general statement, but you think the state of all classified military research is less than what is known publicly, or just this missile?

This is actually a good post. I agree with you here. I mean shit they were flying the B-2 Stealth Bomber around in the 70s and that thing still looks like it's from the future.

If that were the case there would be no need for "Classified/FMS/DMS". I worked on a project for a Defense firm who specialize in missile power offerings. The United States is very strict on what companies can sell and who they can sell them to.

A lot, just because a project canned doesnt mean it totally goes unfounded or is never built, half the time we'll never see what the military keeps from us. Wolveswithkeys is right, the F-117 was flying around in the 70's(Have Blue). B-2 (rumored)actually had a even more advanced model that Northrop Grumman built, but was never made in mass production.

I'm sure there is a bit of both. Never good to reveal your true hand, but it can also be best to bluff.

In general there probably isn't much value in looking at publications too seriously beyond "this is what they are telling us"

At some point they have to make those things fly faster and faster. It is not really a surprise.

Mach 5 or above is considered hypersonic (anything 5 times faster than sound)
 
When I worked at Northrop Grumman most of the "secret" projects were well known to the public.

It's the TS projects that become extremely compartmentalized, where components were designed more or less off of specs and only a few key people knew of the real work or how all the pieces went together.

Example: power supply 12volts 24 volts, 93% efficiency, temp -12c to 95c, 10x12x12, 240vac input, 1000 more specs, etc...

At the NGC facility in Baltimore all TS projects operated out of a separate compound known as the vault. If you worked in the vault whenever someone asked what you did or what you were working on the normal reply was "the vault" and that's where the conversation ended.

I'm fairly certain most of Northrop's most secret projects were based out of California because I never really saw anything mind blowing but I only worked there 3 years so maybe I wasn't there long enough to see the really cool shit.

Probably the coolest thing i did was build a LIDAR satellite with huge power banks, way more then required. Always made me wonder. I scratched my name on some epoxy used for securing wiring on a few panels while under a microscope incase it really was a space laser like i think it was.

My name is floating around in space forever bitches, hopefully on a deadly satellite.

Edit: working on space stuff is so fucking tedious, literally theres a logbook everytime u touch it. every wire is measured, tested, the components resistors, capacitors etc all go through individual testing. Ur in a 10k ppm clean room wearing a suit all day. everything is triple checked triple tested triple weighed. I understand the reasoning but i'd take me 10x as long to do something when working on something going into space. It's cool as hell though. Once i finish up this AE degree (have EE) i plan on applying to every private space company out there. Its the future.

A dream to be honest, however where i am a lot of defense company's are out here. Personally id go space, but the locations of some of those private space company's suck. New mexico blows
 
Oh its a definitely a Dream with the DARPA thing. Don't think I'll be able to get a TS/SCI again anyway with the things I've been doing lmao.
